VisionQuest New Trailer Forces Paul Bettany’s Synthezoid to Work With James Spader’s Ultron Over Thomas Shepherd

Paul Bettany’s rebooted synthezoid shares a mind with Ultron while hunting the truth about Thomas Shepherd in VisionQuest.

Marvel Television has released a new trailer for VisionQuest, and the footage centers on a reunion between Paul Bettany’s synthezoid hero and James Spader. Spader returns as Ultron, the maniacal artificial intelligence positioned in the series as Vision’s on-screen father figure. The latest preview also places a mysterious boy named Thomas Shepherd, played by Ruaridh Mollica, directly on Vision’s radar.

The former Avenger must work with Ultron to unravel the enigma surrounding the boy, who may be his reincarnated son. Marvel frames the story with the line “Family is forever,” tying the father-and-son reunion to the larger search for identity. The Disney+ original is set up as a two-episode premiere, with the new trailer serving as the final major look before that launch.

What is VisionQuest about?

VisionQuest marks the final chapter in the trilogy that started with Marvel Television’s WandaVision. In that series, a grieving Wanda Maximoff conjured a new Vision and built a life inside a world that was not real. The new series picks up after that constructed reality has collapsed, with the synthezoid left to define himself outside it.

Rebuilt and rebooted, Vision possesses all of his former self’s memories, but none of his virtue, and he searches for new meaning. That gap between recollection and character is the engine of the story the trailer is selling. The former Avenger is no longer simply the hero remembered from the Avengers, because the reboot left the memories intact and the moral core unfinished.

Marvel Television is treating the series as the closing movement of the WandaVision story rather than a standalone android adventure. WandaVision established the family Wanda Maximoff created, and VisionQuest asks what remains of that family once the illusion is gone. The new trailer uses the Shepherd enigma to pull Vision out of isolation and back into a relationship he does not fully understand.

Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, Vincenzo Natali, and Terry Matalas direct the series. The writing team is Terry Matalas, Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti, and Matthew Okumura. That roster is the creative group behind the father-and-son story the new trailer is now putting in front of viewers.

VisionQuest stars Paul Bettany, James Spader, Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, and Jonathan Sayer, with Emily Hampshire and James D’Arcy. Bettany leads as Vision, Spader reprises Ultron, and Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd, the boy who may be the synthezoid’s reincarnated son. The remaining ensemble fills out the world around that central trio as the series moves toward its Disney+ debut.
