Netflix has given Virgin River an early renewal for a sixth season, long before the fifth season premiered, assuring fans that Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s (Martin Henderson) story will continue after the Christmas episodes. Now that Season 5 has ended, many can’t help but ask when they can anticipate the series' continuation. Thankfully, after a long wait, Virgin River Season 6’s filming schedule and details are finally revealed.
Netflix announced the coming of Virgin River Season 6 in May 2023, but the series hasn’t begun its production yet due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. The filming was originally scheduled over the summer, but it was later moved until a resolution for the two Hollywood strikes was met. Now that the strikes had ended, the cameras would finally start rolling.
According to What’s on Netflix, two sources, ProductionWeekly and the Directors Guild of Canada, confirmed that the new season’s production will begin on February 2, 2024, and run until May 17, 2024. The filming location will still be in British Columbia, Canada. The production will be around the Canadian province, including Langley, Burnaby, Maple Ridge, Squamish, New Westminster, and Vancouver.
The DGC’s production list sheet even revealed that the new season’s office would open in January 2024, and the production would also use the company name of Sea to Sea Productions ULC. No directors have been listed yet for the upcoming new episodes, but their names may finally be revealed when the new year begins. However, Neil Williams’ name emerged as the new season’s production manager.
What to expect from Virgin River Season 6
After the previous season answered the fans’ many questions, the show’s producer and writer Erin Cardillo told Tudum that “plenty more complications” would still happen in Virgin River Season 6. Of course, this involves fan-favorite characters, and fellow producer and writer Richard Keith teased that it would affect that “too beautiful and too awesome to be too happy for too long” couple.
Fans don't have to worry though, as he cleared that it wouldn’t be Jack and Mel, as these two had already had their fair share of problems. But, if they made their stories too bright and beautiful, he said viewers would have nothing to watch. Keith then promised that despite the terrible things the characters faced, there would always be a happy ending.
“It may not be the happy ending they were expecting, but they find their way to a happy place that, in some ways, might be happier than if they’d ended up where they thought they would to begin with,” he explained.
Netflix has yet to reveal when Virgin River Season 6 will be released. But based on the production schedule, there are theories that it might be out in late 2024 or early 2025. As it may take a little while before the new season begins, fans can catch up on the series as all five seasons are available to stream on the service.
