Aside from the holiday cheers, the family gatherings, and the Christmas tree-decorating competition, the upcoming Virgin River Season 5 Christmas episodes are about to solve one thing: the mystery surrounding Mel’s biological father. The fifth season’s first part ended with a revelation that Mel’s father is also from the small town of Virgin River. As this seems farfetched, one of the series’ lead stars, Alexandra Breckenridge, weighs on this unexpected twist.

Now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has ended, Breckenridge has the chance to talk about Virgin River Season 5 and the bombshell revelation that happened in the first part finale. However, as the twist about her biological father seems to have come out of nowhere, considering she just chose to live in the Virgin River after seeing it in an ad in the series premiere, this new side of the story feels random for some.

In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith revealed there was something magical about this place for Mel’s mom, and she somehow inherited that idea as a little girl. So, when she saw it in an ad and happened upon the place, something pulled her to it, and it even came timely that the place was looking for nurse practitioners.

“So, it was playing with the mythology a little bit and the origins but in the spirit of trying to deepen it and find a little more opportunity to explore other parts of Mel’s life,” he explained.

Alternatively, Breckenridge finds it “convenient” that Mel’s father also lives in Virgin River, making it feel like “a little bit television.” So, knowing the only family Mel has is her sister, it will be a great opportunity for the character to reconnect with a parent. “Also, I think it’s such a bomb for her to understand that her mother was having an affair,” the actress added.

She continued that it would be a huge deal for the series, as they are eyeing to make things lighter for Virgin River Season 5 Christmas episodes after everything that happened to Mel and Jack. “It was important to give that to the audience,” she said.

Alexandra Breckenridge Reveals What to Expect from Virgin River Season 5 Christmas Episodes

Meanwhile, Breckenridge revealed what fans can expect from Virgin River Season 5 Christmas episodes. After waiting to do the Christmas episodes since the show started, the 41-year-old felt Virgin River was the perfect place to feature this special, calling it “the most Hallmark-esque” show on Netflix.

As the holiday season is about family, the This is Us star teased fans are about to see what Mel’s relationship with his father will mean and if her dad will even want to talk to her or vice versa. But despite the many questions that need answers, Breckenridge promised that they would keep everything light and Christmas-y.

“It was like filming a romcom more than it was Virgin River,” she teased. “Martin was so light and airy; he was not like himself.”
