It's no secret that Craig Mazin is currently hard at work developing the second season of the wildly successful The Last of Us show. However, it looks like the co-showrunner of the HBO series is keeping his distance from another live-action adaptation of a popular game. A new report suggests that Mazin has removed his name from the Borderlands film that will star Cate Blanchett.
Back in 2020, it was announced that a Borderlands movie is in the works with Cate Blanchett attached to play Lilith. It was also confirmed that Eli Roth will direct the project and co-write the screenplay with Craig Mazin.
The project already has a lot of big names attached at this point but a recent update on the Borderlands film may have revealed that Mazin is choosing to remove his own from the movie. The Writer's Guild of America's listing of Borderlands does not show Mazin's name in the writing credits. Instead, the writing credits belong to Eli Roth and one Joe Crombie, who is believed to be a pen name for Mazin.

But why has Craig Mazin decided to distance himself from the project? IGN investigated the issue, citing that Borderlands is going through a labored production. Additionally, the film has undergone several reshoots in the past.
For now, it is unclear what troubles the Borderlands film is going through. Nevertheless, the project appears to be moving forward despite not having an official release date.
Borderlands will star Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Edgar Ramirez, Bobby Lee and Jamie Lee Curtis. It is currently set to hit theaters in 2024.
In the meantime, Craig Mazin will serve as co-showrunner on The Last of Us Season 2 alongside Neil Druckmann. The series is set to begin production later this year or in early 2024.
