Taika Waititi Aims to Recapture the "Joy" of the Original Trilogy in His Star Wars Film

When they said nothing beats the original, it proves to be true in many ways and for Taika Waititi, he wants his Star Wars film to have something similar to the Original Trilogy.

The galaxy far, far away expands in both on and off screen as new names arrive to the mega-franchise for new titles that are about to come out in the future. Aside from the new faces with the actors confirmed for various roles, the room where all the magic happens also adds top-tier names like that of Taika Waititi. While the director is not rushing things for his Star Wars movie, he may have already found an inspiration from the Original Trilogy which he aims to recapture the joy of.

Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie remains untitled as of the moment but the director already has a goal on what his movie would be or feel like: the Original Trilogy. With Star Wars: Episode 4 - A New Hope, Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode 6 - Return of the Jedi, the director aims to have the same tone in his Star Wars movie. Speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Waititi reveals that he is not rushing his work for Lucasfilm:

I've been developing [the Star Wars film] for a few years, but I think with any film, but that one in particular, it's something I'd really like to get right so I don't want to rush it. It's going to bubble along on the side.

Waititi adds what similar Star Wars movies he'd want to go for with the tone of his upcoming film:

I wanna capture that joy and entertainment of those early ones like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and all those ones, so I'm trying to figure that out. It'll happen.

Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back, and Episode 6 - Return of the Jedi were released four decades ago but the movies remain to be staples on the Star Wars line-up as the best ones. As many would say, nothing beats the original, and in the case of Star Wars, that still stands true.

The filmmaker, actor, and comedian Taika Waititi is best known for his works such as Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok, and What Do We Do in the Shadows. Looking at his previous works, there is no doubt that he scored a Lucasfilm movie which was announced by Kathleen Kennedy during the Disney's Investor's Day in 2020. As he ends his stint with the MCU after he confirmed that he would not be involved in Thor 5, his Star Wars project finally got an update after being stagnant for three years.

Taika Waititi spoke to ETOnline as regards the status of his Star Wars movie. He revealed, "At the moment, I'm still developing something with them." Waititi continued to reiterate that he is not rushing things and he is taking his time to bring Lucasfilm a film of his own signature, "My thing is I want to take my time with that and get it right. I don't want to rush this movie." That being said, his Star Wars movie remains in early development.

Currently, there are no Star Wars films that are scheduled for release but there is the Rey Skywalker movie that is also underway like that of Waititi's. It has been years since Star Wars did not have a film but what's good is that their series on Disney+ can suffice the gap while waiting.
