The renowned author Timothy Zahn recently shared his thoughts on how the character was portrayed and what motivates him in the show. In addition to that, he teased Thrawn's return in Ahsoka Season 2.
Speaking at the Talking Thrawn panel during Twin Cities Con in Minneapolis that was attended by Star Wars News Net's Nate Manning this weekend, Zahn provided insight into the character's journey from his original Heir to the Empire novel to his on-screen appearance, likening it to "watching your kid get on the bus on the first of school." The author emphasized the significance of Dave Filoni's intimate understanding of Thrawn's character before explaining Thrawn's motivations, specifically his drive to bring his vision of the Empire back with him from Peridea.
According to Zahn, this ambition stems from Thrawn's dedication to aiding the Chiss Ascendancy. He believes that the New Republic cannot effectively support this goal, leaving the re-establishment of the Empire as the only viable option.
"Everything flows from his motivation to help the Chiss. He believes the New Republic won't be able to help that goal so bringing the Empire back is the only way," Zahn said.
Is Thrawn bringing back the Empire for the Chiss Ascendancy?
In his 2017 Thrawn novel, Zahn had previously established that Thrawn's alignment with the Empire was a strategic move to protect the interests of the Chiss Ascendancy. Thrawn recognized the potential threats in the Unknown Regions, and he saw the Empire's strength as a means to address these concerns. The core aspect of his character was pivotal in subsequent novels such as Thrawn: Alliances and Thrawn: Treason, often putting Thrawn at odds with the Empire's leadership, who questioned his loyalty.
But does this mean we'll get to see Thrawn's people the Chiss in the second season of Ahsoka? Zahn pointed out that, "[Thrawn] is going to his stride in the second series of Ahsoka." However, he quickly added that "we assume there's going to be a second series" and stated that Lucasfilm hasn't confirmed anything yet.
