Star Wars: The Mandalorian star Brendan Wayne has been sharing intriguing insights about Lucasfilm’s upcoming movie adaptation. After raising questions about the studio’s decision to announce Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu instead of The Mandalorian Season 4, he now offers hints about the movie’s storyline, basing it on the title itself.
Fans who have seen The Mandalorian Season 3 know that Din Djarin officially adopted Grogu, taking him under his wing as his apprentice. As the series has shown the incredible bond between these two characters, Wayne, who portrays Din Djarin’s body double, recognizes this connection and anticipates that The Mandalorian & Grogu will continue to explore this extraordinary relationship.
“The title seems to be speaking to a relationship that we've all fallen in love with,” the actor told Screen Rant. “I think they'll follow that line.”
If this claim is true, fans will see the next Star Wars film digging deeper into the newly established relationship between Din Djarin and Grogu as a father and son duo. Hence, the movie may prioritize focusing on these characters more instead of showing its connection to the franchise or other characters, though the latter may still be explored.
What to Expect from The Mandalorian & Grogu
Lucasfilm has remained mum about the story of The Mandalorian & Grogu, but based on the title itself, it’s expected to continue the journey of its titular characters. However, it remains to be seen if it will pick up where the series’ third season ended, replacing The Mandalorian Season 4, or tell a new story. During the movie’s announcement in January, director Jon Favreau revealed that he loved to tell stories set in the “rich world” that George Lucas created.
“The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting,” he told the franchise’s official website.
Alternatively, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy claimed that Favreau and Dave Filoni, who also co-produced the film, helped mark the coming of “two new and beloved” characters into the Star Wars world, making them a “perfect fit for the big screen.” That said, the film is set to lead Lucasfilm’s new slate of Star Wars movies, including those helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Filoni himself.
During an earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that The Mandalorian & Grogu would kickstart Star Wars’ theatrical release, which would start on May 22, 2026. Though the movie may still feature the threats the galaxy far, far away faces, it may still put Din Djarin and Grogu’s relationship in front and center, just like what Wayne revealed.
