The future looks bright for Star Wars movies, as the franchise will soon return to the big screen after the 2019 Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. There have been several plans to get the galaxy far, far away back to theaters after putting its focus on TV with the number of series released on Disney+. So, despite the shakeups, Disney has finally confirmed the release dates for the three upcoming Star Wars films.
For starters, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy confirmed the coming of three Star Wars movies by the directors Dave Filoni (Ahsoka), Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), and James Mangold (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) at the Star Wars Celebration 2023. However, a major change happened when Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed during an earnings call that the recently announced The Mandalorian & Grogu would lead the franchise’s theatrical slate. So, as Disney recently confirmed its movie schedule through 2031, here are the three Star Wars movies that may take those dates.

The Mandalorian & Grogu – May 22, 2026
While fans await the official announcement of The Mandalorian Season 4, Lucasfilm announced the coming of The Mandalorian & Grogu instead. Din Djarin and his adopted son, Grogu, will continue their adventure on the big screen with Jon Favreau at the helm. The film is set to start its production this year with Kennedy and Filoni as the producers.
Though neither Disney nor Lucasfilm confirmed that the film would be released on May 22, 2026, Iger’s confirmation that it would kickstart the new era of Star Wars movies made it the safe bet to take the said date. So far, nothing has been revealed yet about the feature’s plot.

Rey Skywalker’s New Jedi Order – December 18, 2026
Before The Mandalorian & Grogu was announced, Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker movie about the new Jedi Order was supposed to be the first Star Wars film to be released after seven years. Directed by the Oscar winner Obaid-Chinoy, it will see Rey’s return and venture to rebuild the Jedi Order after the Skywalker Saga.
True to Star Wars fashion, details about the yet-to-be-titled film are scarce. But rumors have it that it will also start filming this year. That said, it may be the next film that will hit the theaters, grabbing the December 18, 2026, release date if everything works according to plan.

MandoVerse Crossover or Dawn of the Jedi – December 17, 2027
So far, Lucasfilm has already confirmed four Star Wars movies—the three announced at the Star Wars Celebration 2023 and The Mandalorian & Grogu. But as Disney only confirmed three release dates, it could go to either the MandoVerse crossover or Dawn of the Jedi.
The MandoVerse crossover by Filoni will be the culmination of the series’ interconnected stories. However, knowing the director still has a lot on his plate with Ahsoka Season 2 and other projects, and the MandoVerse still has a lot of stories left to tell before it concludes, it may still take a while before this finally comes to fruition.
Thus, the third Star Wars movie that may hit the big screen is Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi, possibly taking the December 17, 2027, release date. The film will follow the story of the beginning of the Force and the birth of the Jedi, set 25,000 years before the Skywalker Saga.
Disney has only confirmed the release dates for its three upcoming Star Wars movies, so which film will take those dates remains to be seen. As no film has been set in stone yet, everything may still change, so fans are advised to take these assumptions with a grain of salt. However, what is important is that the franchise is finally back to making movies again.
