Amid the unknown future of The Mandalorian Season 4, Lucasfilm has announced a new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, to the surprise of many. Though this may not be the update fans have been waiting for about the continuation of Din Djarin and his newly adopted son’s story, it can’t be denied that it has made the viewers excited about what’s next for the galaxy far, far away. As the film comes to fruition, Disney has revealed its release date.

Disney has released its full movie schedule through 2031, including three Star Wars films. The first to release is an untitled Star Wars movie, set to hit the silver screen on May 22, 2026. As Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed during an earnings call (via Comicbook) that The Mandalorian & Grogu would lead the new slate of Star Wars movies, it’s believed that the Jon Favreau-helmed film is the first to have a theatrical release.

So far, there are four confirmed Star Wars films. At the Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced the coming of three Star Wars movies from the directors Dave Filoni (Ahsoka), Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), and James Mangold (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny). The next picture that will have a theatrical release is believed to be Obaid-Chinoy's Rey Skywalker, set on December 18, 2026. It will then be followed by Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi or Filoni's New Republic, scheduled on December 17, 2027.

“Looking to our 2025 theatrical slate, we're excited to bring audiences Captain America: Brave New World, Fantastic Four, Pixar's Elio, Zootopia 2, and Avatar 3," Iger revealed. “And we're already looking forward to 2026 and beyond with Frozen 3, the first Toy Story movie since 2019 [Toy Story 5], and a new Star Wars movie that brings the Mandalorian and Grogu to the big screen for the very first time.”

What is The Mandalorian & Grogu about?

So far, Lucasfilm has remained mum about the story of The Mandalorian & Grogu. But based on the title, it's expected to see the return of Pedro Pascal as Mando alongside Baby Yoda. According to Collider, The Mandalorian Season 4 is still a go, and it will set the plot for the film. This just supported the claim by the known Star Wars scooper Bespin Bulletin that the movie would be released after the fourth season. Allegedly, the series would only have six episodes, and The Mandalorian & Grogu would act as the season finale.

Talking about the new Star Wars movie, Filoni recently told Entertainment Tonight it would be “great.” With Favreau as the director, he’s confident it will be “fantastic.”

He said:

I'm excited about what we're doing right now, but the movie, I think, is gonna be great. With Jon at the helm, it's gonna be fantastic, and he's so well-studied in Star Wars now, so he's got a great shorthand, and I love collaborating with him. Just excited to share the future of what we're doing.
