Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Will Not Feature Boba Fett, Temuera Morrison Confirms

While many expect Din Djarin and Grogu's allies to join them in The Mandalorian and Grogu, Boba Fett will not be among them.

The anticipation is now high for Star Wars’ first movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, after J.J. Abrams’ 2019 Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Din Djarin and Grogu will soon return to continue their adventure in the galaxy far, far away, though this time on the big screen. While details about the film remain scarce, some of their enemies and allies are expected to join them, like Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze. However, one major character from Disney+’s The Mandalorian will be left out, as Temuera Morrison has confirmed that Boba Fett will not be featured in the movie.

Boba Fett is one of the most popular Star Wars characters. Before he had his own show, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s 2021 The Book of Boba Fett, he was a major part of The Mandalorian Season 2. However, despite his character’s importance in the series, he will not be part of The Mandalorian and Grogu.

“I'm still waiting for a phone call, to be quite honest,” he said at the Fan Expo in Chicago (via ScreenRant). “I think we're just put on the shelf for a little bit. Maybe we come off the shelf later.”

Director Favreau confirmed at D23 2024 that The Mandalorian and Grogu had already started filming. So, if Morrison is part of the cast, he should know his filming schedule by now and will deny his involvement in the film to keep its secrecy. However, as he’s still waiting for the call, his appearance looks far from happening.

The Book of Boba Fett May Have Affected Character’s Future in The Mandalorian and Grogu

The Book of Boba Fett continued the story of the former bounty hunter following his escape from the Sarlacc pit in Richard Marquand’s 1983 Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. While the series excited many to the point that Lucasfilm might have assumed it would be a big hit, the opposite happened.

Despite Boba Fett’s popularity and appearances in various series and movies, The Book of Boba Fett holds the lowest score of any Disney+ series in the franchise, with a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received mixed reviews from audiences, resulting in a 49% score.

The show appeared to alter the character’s story, depicting him as a warlord on Tatooine who was reluctant to commit any criminal activities. As a result, even Morrison questioned the direction of his character’s narrative, especially since he knew that Boba Fett didn’t speak much.

“Sometimes, I'd say [to Favreau], 'I think this is too much, I think this is too much,'” he told NME in 2022. “I said: 'Noah, this scene tomorrow. I'm talking too much! This Boba Fett doesn't talk this much.”

By the looks of it, the series’ poor reception has affected the character’s future in the franchise. So, as The Book of Boba Fett Season 2 is yet to be confirmed and he will not be part of The Mandalorian and Grogu, it remains to be seen when Boba Fett will appear next.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to be released on May 22, 2026.
