The eagerly-awaited Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster has officially received a release date, and fans are excited. Last year in September, the game’s developers, Nightdive Studios, announced that it would remaster the classic Star Wars: Dark Forces first-person shooter that was originally released back in 1995. Almost 30 years later, the game will not be playable in new ways once it arrives during the second month of 2024.

The developers shared the news today (via GameSpot), claiming that Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster will officially launch on February 28, 2024. While players could only play the original game on PlayStation and PC, the upcoming remaster would be playable on all modern platforms, including PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5.

Talking about the game’s upgrades, it will now feature a framerate that goes to 120fps on all platforms except for Switch as well as 4K visuals. Regardless of these significant improvements, Dark Forces still works similarly to the original one, giving players the same experience they want, and is set to take them down a nostalgic road with its classic mechanics and format.

Everything About Star Wars: Dark Forces

You can get some idea of what Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster is going to be about by reading its official description below:

Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster has been brought to life by the team at Nightdive Studios, fully remastered through its proprietary KEX engine, allowing the game to run on modern gaming devices at up to 4K resolution at 120 frames per second. New and returning players will enjoy Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster's upgraded gameplay, high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and rendering, and support for gamepads. The original 1995 Star Wars: Dark Forces raised the bar for first-person shooter games, offering players a significant degree of movement and interactivity, a large selection of items and power-ups, and engaging environments. In the first Star Wars first-person shooter video game, players assume the role of Kyle Katarn, a defector of the Galactic Empire turned mercenary for hire. Katarn joins the Rebel Alliance's covert operations division tasked with infiltrating the Galactic Empire, where he discovers the secret Dark Trooper Project. The development of this powerful new series of Imperial battle droids and power-armored stormtroopers stands to strengthen the Empire's grip on the galaxy unless Katarn and the Rebel Alliance intervene.

On top of being among some of the first shooter games set in the Star Wars universe, Dark Forces has also earned some fame for being the game to introduce the protagonist Kyle Katarn. After he appeared in Dark Forces, Katarn then starred in a couple of sequels, such as Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2, and Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast.

As a result of Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars IP, Katarn became non-canon and is now part of Star Wars Legends. However, this change hasn’t stopped Katarn’s popularity from plummeting over the years, especially for players who have been playing the Jedi Knight series since their childhood. Hopefully, Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster also lives up to the hype and expectations!
