GTA 6 Leonida Map Stands As Rockstar's Biggest World Yet

The Leonida map of Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed to be Rockstar's biggest open world ever “by some degree”.

Rockstar is positioning the state of Leonida as more than a stretched-out playground for Grand Theft Auto VI. The Florida-inspired setting is framed as the studio’s biggest map by some degree, roughly doubling the footprint of Grand Theft Auto V while packing far more finished interiors into every block.

Game Informer covers that scale in its latest issue, pairing new screenshots with developer comments on density, localized weather, and a world meant to feel complete from rooftops down to alley interiors. The preview treats Leonida as one cohesive state instead of a single city with empty outskirts bolted on afterward.

How big is Leonida map in GTA 6?

No official square-kilometer figure has been published, yet Rockstar’s comparison to the last numbered entry remains the clearest public yardstick. GTAV is commonly measured at about 75-80 square kilometers in total, with roughly 50 square kilometers of land, so a true doubling would put Leonida near 150-160 square kilometers including ocean boundaries, or close to 100 square kilometers on land.

“This new world is different,” Garbut explains. “We obsessed about every part – the rooftops, the alleys, the internals and everything in between to the point we hit a critical mass with the numbers of our interiors, and you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out. This world is a cohesive whole with the density of content and a hand-crafted quality to every bit.”

That density is meant to sit across six distinct regions rather than one sprawling city and a handful of satellite towns.

  • Vice City

  • Leonida Keys

  • Grassrivers

  • Port Gellhorn

  • Ambrosia

  • Mount Kalaga National Park

Vice City is the Miami-coded urban core, built around beaches, Art Deco streets, a cruise port, and roads congested enough to change how chases unfold. The Leonida Keys run south as a tropical island chain, while Grassrivers recreates Everglades-style wetlands that force different routes, vehicles, and water travel.

Port Gellhorn is cast as a faded coastal strip of cheap motels and tired shopping centers that once lived off tourism. Ambrosia sits inland as the industrial heart of the state, defined by factories, refineries, and a working landscape rather than neon. Mount Kalaga National Park occupies the northern edge with forests, trails, and a wilder vertical stretch of land.

The pause-menu map itself is being rebuilt to resemble satellite imagery instead of a flat schematic overlay. Weather is localized across those regions, so one corner of Leonida can sit under clear skies while another takes a tropical storm or hurricane, with wind blocked by buildings and water pouring off rooftops and lampposts.

Red Dead Redemption 2 only edged past Grand Theft Auto 5 in size, which makes the claimed leap for Leonida stand out even inside Rockstar’s own catalog. Interiors, alleys, and rooftops were pushed until buildings read as real from both sides, turning extra kilometers into places instead of empty distance between mission markers.

That extra land only matters if players can actually inhabit it when GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The release now arrives against a map Rockstar is selling as twice the last game and denser besides, which is the real test of whether Leonida feels like a finished state or just a larger loading screen.
