Song Hye-kyo's first project in three years pairs her with Gong Yoo in Tantara, a period drama set inside South Korea's entertainment business from the 1960s through the 1980s. The series follows people who begin with almost nothing and risk everything for a chance at the kind of success that could change their lives.

Netflix confirmed that Tantara will premiere worldwide on Friday, December 11. The announcement arrived with new posters showing the central characters arranged around a turntable, their separate ambitions and hardships unfolding as one long panorama of lives shaped by music.

The story is set in an era when South Korea's record business could be reckless and brutal. Its characters are not introduced as stars, but as people trying to survive long enough to become somebody in an industry that offers no easy route upward.

Song Hye-kyo plays Min-ja, who grows up in poverty and takes whatever work she can find to earn money. She eventually enters the record industry, carrying the determination formed by a childhood in which security was never guaranteed.

Gong Yoo plays Dong-gu, Min-ja's childhood friend and the person who remains beside her as she pursues that dream. The two endure the same difficult beginnings, work jobs that include waiting tables and eventually move into the business as rookie managers.

Kim Seol-hyun plays Min-hee, whose relationship with Min-ja mixes affection with rivalry. Min-hee is bold about chasing success on her own terms, which puts her close to Min-ja while also setting their ambitions against each other.

Cha Seung-won plays Seok Gil-yeo, the most celebrated composer of the era. Gil-yeo has the rare ability to turn an unknown rookie singer into a famous star, making him one of the people who can alter the course of a young performer's life.

Lee Ha-nee plays Yang-ja, who is shown singing with an expression that combines desperation and excitement. Na Moon-hee plays Mal-soon, whose gaze carries the joys and sorrows accumulated over the years.

The posters place Min-hee at a microphone and Gil-yeo at a saxophone, tying the ensemble together through the music business. They also trace Min-ja and Dong-gu from their poor childhood through the odd jobs that precede their first real opportunity.

Tantara is written by Noh Hee-kyung and directed by Lee Yoon-jung. It is Noh's first new series in more than four years, following a run of dramas that includes Worlds Within, That Winter, the Wind Blows, It's Okay, That's Love and Our Blues.

The series also marks Song Hye-kyo's third collaboration with Noh, after Worlds Within and That Winter, the Wind Blows. Gong Yoo, meanwhile, reunites with Lee Yoon-jung nearly two decades after she directed him in Coffee Prince.

Before taking the title Tantara, the production was developed under working titles including Slowly but Intensely and Show Business. It is produced by Studio Dragon, GTist and Imaginus, and filming ran from January 2025 into January 2026.

Korean reports have put the production budget at roughly ₩80 billion, or about $56 million, underlining the scale Netflix is giving the period setting and its ensemble. The series has also been produced as a 22-episode run, giving its multi-decade story room to follow the characters as the business around them changes.
