The mystery anime Aniplex had been teasing is Null Meta, a TV anime adaptation of Kokamumo's 4-panel manga about an android girl whose daily life refuses to stay ordinary. The adaptation was announced through the anime's official account alongside a teaser visual, with studio Soigne producing and Kai Ikarashi — the director of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 — taking his first turn as a TV anime director.
The teaser visual shows Kurumi, the android at the center of the story, cheering with both arms thrown up against a bright blue background scattered with shards of shattered glass. No trailer, cast members, broadcaster or streaming partner have been announced yet.
A TRIGGER veteran takes his first TV director's chair
Ikarashi's name will be familiar to TRIGGER fans — he handled the storyboard and animation direction on episode 6 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, one of the most acclaimed episodes of that series, before stepping up to direct its sequel. Null Meta pairs that visual flair with a very different kind of material: a gag-driven 4-panel comedy rather than a cyberpunk tragedy.
The key staff announced so far:
Director: Kai Ikarashi — Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 director; Cyberpunk: Edgerunners episode 6 storyboard and animation director
Series composition: Tatsuya Takahashi — The IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls, Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon
Character design: Shin Ogasawara — Pokémon: Twilight Wings
Animation production: Soigne — mono, Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana
What is Null Meta about?
The anime adapts Kokamumo's 4-panel slice-of-life comedy manga, which has been serialized in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara MAX since 2020 after a short guest run earlier that year. Six collected volumes have been released in Japan so far.
The manga follows Kurumi, a not-so-bright android, and Chiaki, the guardian who builds and modifies her. They are joined by the cool, easygoing Sakina and Shiyuki, the closest thing the group has to a voice of reason. The official site introduces the series like this:
The singularity of slice-of-life anime, Null Meta , receives its long-awaited TV anime adaptation! The 4-panel manga Null Meta (serialized in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara MAX ) depicts the unpredictable daily lives woven by four people: the android Kurumi and her guardian Chiaki, the cool, laid-back Sakina, and Shiyuki, the only sane person (?). This alternative slice-of-life work, which grandly overflows the boundaries of the slice-of-life genre, now springs to life as an anime! Kai Ikarashi — who has created striking visuals across numerous animations and stands out from the crowd (director of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 ) — takes on his first role as a TV anime director. Shin Ogasawara ( Pokémon: Twilight Wings ) handles character design, Tatsuya Takahashi ( The IDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls ) handles series composition, and animation production is by the one and only Soigne ( mono , Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana ). An epoch-making animation dedicated to all anime fans, Null Meta — do not miss this turning point in anime history!!
The series is scheduled to premiere in 2027, with Aniplex presenting the project. Further details, including the voice cast and broadcast information, are expected in the coming months.
