The Mortal Kombat 2 creator has finally put the speculations to rest by confirming that Karl Urban will play the iconic fighter Johnny Cage in the movie. Fans saw a part of him in the final scenes of the original film that were unofficially released as a tease.

The franchise co-creator, Ed Boon, revealed this amazing news on Twitter by sharing an image of himself with Karl Urban. In the picture, he also included a reference to both Johnny Cage’s fatalities in Mortal Kombat X as well as The Shining.

Unfortunately, the post does not reveal any other details related to Karl Urban’s character. In the picture, the actor is wearing sunglasses, an accessory quite familiar to Johnny Cage and his smugness.

We are unsure how the actor will transfer into the fighter’s role, but we also can't wait to watch him face many great opponents in the sequel. The movie recently entered production and includes many popular fighters like Baraka, Quan Chi, and Shao Kahn while they work together to take over and enslave Outworld.

The Mortal Kombat story emphasizes the role of Cole Young, an MMA fighter tied up in the world of fantasy and violence. By following this path, he becomes the target of a warrior called Sub-Zero.

In order to compete against his enemy, Cole trains with several formidable fighters such as Sonya Blade, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, and Kano. He attempts to call on an ancient power within him that has been passed down to him from previous generations.

Johnny Cage, on the other hand, was greatly overshadowed in Mortal Kombat. Writer Greg Russo explained that the poster, which gave us a peek at Cole’s trip to search for Johnny Cage, was actually intended to be an early Easter egg, whereas, in the last scene, the protagonist would have headed out to Los Angeles.

Russo also explained how the Mortal Kombat movie had to suffer quite a lot due to COVID-19 in terms of production and development.

"I remember there was a version for the end where they actually went to the lot," Russo said. "So Cole and Sonya went to the studio lot. I forget what it even was, they pulled up, and they were going to the meeting. It was gonna be shot at Warner Bros. But it just felt like, with the pandemic and everything, it got to a point where it was hard to do a lot of that."

The movie was under development when the pandemic was at its peak, and people were still taking precautions. There were many restrictions when it came to filming as well as time limitations, which is why the movie didn't receive the reviews it had the potential to due to lack of proper development.

However, we believe that Mortal Kombat 2 will be an interesting one, but we will have to wait some time for it since it's still in production, so it does not have a release date.
