BioWare is gone and the next Mass Effect game has been canceled with it, but the franchise's future on television is reportedly still alive. The Mass Effect TV series remains in development at Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video, even as the studio that created the games shuts its doors.

Sources inside Prime Video have confirmed to IGN that the series remains in development at Amazon MGM Studios. The same sources added that, as of now, every creative attached to the TV project is still onboard.

That creative team is led by showrunner Doug Jung, whose credits include Mindhunter and Star Trek Beyond. He has held the role since August 2025, with Daniel Casey of Fast & Furious 9 writing the series.

The production team around them includes Jessica Jones executive producer Karim Zreik and former Marvel Studios boss Ari Arad. It also includes Mike Gamble, who led the Mass Effect franchise at BioWare and now finds himself carrying it forward on the television side.

The series has officially been in development at Prime Video since 2024, though it was first rumored back in 2021. It arrived only after years of failed attempts to turn the sci-fi franchise into a feature film instead.

Story details have stayed under wraps, but the shape of the show is known. It will not retread Commander Shepard's origin story from the games, and it will instead be set after the events of the original trilogy.

Across three games released between 2007 and 2012, that trilogy followed Shepard's fight against the Reapers, a machine race bent on wiping out advanced life in the galaxy. Mass Effect: Andromeda took the series to a new galaxy in 2017, and the canceled game was meant to bring the franchise back from it.

The project has already weathered one round of public doubt. This past April, Casey pushed back on reports that Prime Video wanted rewrites to make the show more appealing to a non-gaming audience.

Timing remains the biggest open question. The series was at one point eyeing a production start in the fourth quarter of 2026, but it still has no release date, and BioWare's closure leaves unclear whether that schedule holds.

What is clear is the stakes. EA's restructuring this week closed BioWare and canceled the next Mass Effect game, the one meant to redeem the series after Mass Effect: Andromeda, which means the show may now be the franchise's only future.

Prime Video has reason to keep believing in it. Its Fallout adaptation became one of the streamer's biggest hits, and Mass Effect was reportedly seen as a chance to capture that lightning in a bottle a second time.
