The entire reason behind the most attractive Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay features is the power of the PlayStation 5 console. The developers of the game Insomniac Games recently shared how the advanced hardware of the console has helped in the development of the game and greatly improved its features as compared to before.
While speaking to VG247, the game director of Insomniac Games, Ryan Smith, talked about the game’s most expansive open world and how players will be able to experience new settings. He said, "The PS5 fast loading is something that really helps us," with this entire statement referring to the brand-new “open world switching” feature of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
This swiftness allows players to “swap between Peter and Miles quite quickly. And these transitions give you a chance to see fun animations, too – these transitions have been a place where our animators have been able to get really creative." Since 2018’s Spider-Man game and 2020’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (one of PS5’s release titles) were limited to Manhattan, Spider-Man 2 allows players to fly through New York’s boroughs, Brooklyn, and Queens.
Compared to the hardware of PS4, Smith claims that these technological upgrades "lets you really feel the city – more so than even in the last games, right? Because it's one thing to swing and hit those viewpoints, but when these cinematically-crafted transitions kick in… it's really fun." The director also teased the way in which the development team was "able to integrate character-switching into our set-pieces, too. We can quickly transition between interior and exterior locations, show what each of the heroes are up to, and just get really creative – it lets us come up with some really epic moments in the game."
Players recently got a first look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at 2023’s PlayStation Showcase, in which the devs previewed a huge set piece as Peter and Miles hunt down Curt Connors’ Lizard while simultaneously battling against Kraven’s men. It also showed Peter in his black symbiote suit for the first time as well as the way in which the symbiote has caused his aggressive side to come out, influencing his aggressive attack combos.
PlayStation’s most recent State of Play event also featured an extended preview of the advanced-level design of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. On top of having the ability to swap between Peter and Miles "almost instantly," the pair can also now use the iconic Spider-Man web wings as a secondary source of covering huge distances. The game is all set to feature brand-new Marvel villain cameos, new side missions, and plenty of new costume skins for both characters.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to release on October 20, 2023, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
