Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi opened in Japanese theaters today, and the descent is already set to continue. The film's staff have confirmed that Part 2 of the theatrical series is now in production, keeping the planned trilogy on schedule while the first chapter begins its run.

The announcement came through the film's official website, which confirmed that production on the second part has been decided. The news continues the story directly from Part 1, with a third film set to complete the trilogy at a later date.

A second key visual was released to commemorate the opening, showing Srajo leading the Hail Hex into the depths. The visual puts the spotlight on Srajo's squad, the delver team known as the Curse Fleet, ahead of their full introduction in the films.

Srajo is a White Whistle, one of the most accomplished delvers in the world of the Abyss, and the Hail Hex answers to her. The newly revealed cast for the squad is:

  • Nana Mizuki (Hinata Hyuga in Naruto) as Srajo

  • Akeno Watanabe (Hitch Dreyse in Attack on Titan) as Nishagora

  • Shunsuke Takeuchi (Askin Nakk Le Vaar in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War) as Yataramaru

  • Nao Toyama (Chitoge Kirisaki in Nisekoi) as Sherumi

  • Yume Miyamoto (Rikka Takarada in SSSS.GRIDMAN) as Menae

The core party returns from the television series, with Miyu Tomita as Riko, Mariya Ise as Reg, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi and Misaki Kuno as Faputa. Sumire Morohoshi as Tepaste and Takanori Hoshino as Cravagli, both announced earlier, also feature in the film.

Masayuki Kojima returns to direct the film at Kinema Citrus, with Hideyuki Kurata in charge of the screenplay. Kazuchika Kise and Yuka Kuroda return as character designers, continuing the look they established across the earlier entries.

Takeshi Takakura serves as design leader, with Osamu Masuyama, Teru Sekiguchi and Asaki Nakamura as art directors. Kevin Penkin returns to compose the music, and he performs the theme song Chain of the Abyss together with Mori Calliope.

Part 1 picks up directly after Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the 2022 second season. It follows Riko, Reg, Nanachi and Faputa as they descend into the seventh layer of the Abyss, further from the surface than they have ever been.

What is Made in Abyss about?

Made in Abyss is based on the dark fantasy adventure manga by Akihito Tsukushi, serialized on Takeshobo's Web Comic Gamma service, with 15 volumes released as of August 2026. Seven Seas Entertainment publishes the manga in English.

In an age when the corners of the world have been scoured for their secrets, only one place remains unexplored–a massive cave system known as the Abyss. Those who traverse its endless pits and labyrinth-like tunnels are known as Cave Raiders. A young orphan named Riko dreams of following in her mother’s footsteps as a Cave Raider, and when she meets a strange robot when exploring the Abyss, she’s one step closer to achieving her goal!
