Loki has gone through a lot since the character was introduced in 2011's Thor. After being a villain in his first few Marvel Cinematic Universe films, the God of Mischief has evolved into an important ally to his brother up until Loki's unfortunate death in Avengers: Infinity War. But will Tom Hiddleston's character go back to his old ways in the second season of his MCU series?
When Loki first graced the MCU, his role as a villain was unmistakable. Driven by resentment towards his father Odin's favoritism towards Thor, the God of Mischief orchestrated chaos in Asgard and beyond, culminating in an assault on the Avengers and New York City. However, recent developments have unveiled a more heroic facet of Loki, especially in his eponymous Marvel TV series.
As Loki Season 2 debuts on Disney+, executive producer Kevin Wright told GamesRadar that the mischievous Loki fans have grown to love will showcase his cunning and devilish nature once more in the forthcoming episodes.
"We talked a lot about that with this being a show about identity," Wright said. "We've seen him as a villain, we've seen him as an antihero and he's kind of lived somewhere in the middle through various points in all those years of movies. But now we're pushing him into these situations with more heroic stakes. We know we can't just make him a hero straightaway; we wanted it to be sort of like a series of challenges and obstacles. Is this even something that Loki is capable of?"
It's a surprising tease considering that fans have long believed that Loki has changed his ways and is only trying to save the world from total destruction. Still, Wright's tease hints at a character dynamic that blends heroism and trickery, ensuring Loki's continued evolution as a multifaceted and captivating figure within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Loki Through the Years
It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment when Loki began to evolve as a bad guy. However, it is believed that the God of Mischief was greatly affected by the death of Frigga in Thor: The Dark World and Odin's last words to his sons in Thor: Ragnarok. Despite his animosity with the God of Thunder, Loki has started seeing the world differently, thus leading to his heroic acts in the MCU show.
For now, it is unclear whether the current Loki or perhaps a Variant will be introduced as the villain in the Disney+ series. In the meantime, fans can look forward to Loki Season 2 Episode 2, which is set to premiere on the streaming service on October 12, 2023.
