Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has shared an optimistic update on House of the Dragon Season 3, suggesting a promising future for the series. The prequel, which chronicles House Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons, a widespread civil war in Westeros, garnered critical acclaim with its 2022 debut, and Season 2 is set for a summer 2024 release. Interestingly, Martin confirmed that a third season is already in the works!
In a recent interview with BANGCAST, Martin conveyed that although House of the Dragon Season 2 recently completed filming, plans for the third season are already in motion.
"In television, we have the new show, House of the Dragon, which has just finished filming its second season, and we're going to be planning for the third season soon," Martin said.
The statement certainly reflects confidence that the series will continue to unfold the complete narrative of the Targaryen civil war. If this is the case, House of the Dragon could continue for several seasons after the second and the third.
Will House of the Dragon continue beyond Season 3?
House of the Dragon Season 1 concluded with the death of Rhaenyra Targaryen's son, Lucerys Velaryon, instigated by Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar. The finale set the stage for the onset of the Dance of the Dragons in Season 2. Given that the civil war is just commencing, the series is expected to span multiple seasons to comprehensively cover the ensuing events.
In May 2023, HBO Drama Chief Francesca Orsi hinted that the series might extend beyond Season 4 to fully depict the story. This indicates that while Season 3 is currently in the planning phase, House of the Dragon may continue airing new episodes for several more years. Each season promises to intensify the conflict in Westeros, building toward a climactic and blood-soaked conclusion.

With House of the Dragon Season 2 laying the groundwork for compelling events, the show anticipates a politically engaging and action-packed storyline. The strategic war maneuvers of the Targaryens and the execution of their plans will provide an intriguing start to the civil war. Martin's newfound confidence in the fate of Season 3 suggests that this epic battle will endure for an extended period.
The second season of House of the Dragon is currently set to premiere in Summer 2024. In the meantime, all episodes of Season 1 are available for streaming on HBO GO.
