GTA 6 Community Thinks The Trailer Might Have Showed The Story In Reverse

The sharp-eyed GTA community is back at it with their theories and speculations!

Plenty of GTA 6 fans are still busy taking apart the game’s trailer piece by piece in case they missed any details or skipped some crucial information. Of course, we can’t even blame them since it has been nearly ten years since the last GTA game was released. However, they’ve been pretty determined this time, managing to boost Spotify numbers and helping the GTA 6 trailer break three Guinness World Records.

However, the latest detail pointed out by a GTA fan sure is confusing a lot of players. As highlighted by Reddit user Hudrenn, the GTA 6 trailer might have told Lucia’s story in reverse. They prove this point by sharing an edit that looks quite convincing but is definitely a conclusion based on incomplete information.

In GTA 6’s key art, Lucia can be seen wearing an electronic tag that looks like an ankle bracelet. It was further highlighted by Ravenbtw that she’s not wearing it when she joins the male protagonist in a heist. Once you compare the image embedded below with the one Ravenbtw posted, you can see that there’s no ankle bracelet.

It would be strange for Lucia to be released from prison, potentially handle the anklet, carry out another heist, and return to prison in time for her to receive a second ankle bracelet simply for the character design featured on the official artwork. While it is strange, it isn’t impossible since electronic devices are a messed up concept when you reside in a country that privatises their use.

You can watch the edited clip of how it would look if the theory about Lucia's story being told in the GTA 6 trailer in reverse is right.

What are some official sources that possibly back up this theory?

As per a piece by ACLU Florida back in 2022, tracking devices similar to the one Lucia is wearing can be put on people "awaiting trial, serving probation and parole, and facing immigration proceedings." This means that Lucia might be wearing it as she awaits trial or while she’s on probation, and that’s either before or after she’s out of prison. The article also states that such devices can apply financial pressure as one is usually charged for the electronic tracking device the state forces one to wear. It reads:

Depending on the jurisdiction, fees to wear these monitors range from $3-$35 a day, often in addition to initial setup charges, which can range from $100 to $200. The expensive fees compound and can amount to hundreds of dollars per month, overburdening households already dealing with the return of loved ones from incarceration.

It’s worth noting that these jurisdictions aren’t only limited to Florida. A ProRepublica article written in collaboration with the New York Times shares the story of 19-year-old Daehaun White, who needed to pay similar fees back in 2018. It read, “He would be required to pay $10 a day to a private company, Eastern Missouri Alternative Sentencing Services, or EMASS. Just to get the monitor attached, he would have to report to EMASS and pay $300 up front—enough to cover the first 25 days, plus a $50 installation fee."

Once he missed the deadline because of a forgotten letter, his mother claimed that she "felt that the court was forcing her to choose between getting White out of jail" by paying the fees "and supporting the rest of her family." However, there’s a chance that this “reverse trailer” turns out to be wrong, depending on how much the developers are determined to explore such types of themes.

There’s also a chance that Lucia might have been given an anklet before we see her in prison,  the financial pressure of which might have forced her to pursue a life of crime. Regardless of this, the theory is quite convincing. The way in which the GTA 6 story is told in reverse, shifting from Lucia and her potential boyfriend talking about “trust” to a heist, to driving, to being chased by police, to landing in jail, does make sense.

Not only this, but when you view it from a game design perspective it makes a lot more sense since it would be a helpful framing device to limit Lucia’s movements on the map for some part of the game. However, it is only a theory and hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, so it’s best not to take it seriously!
