After the release of J.J. Abrams’ 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm has focused on creating Star Wars TV shows on Disney+. Starting with Star Wars: The Mandalorian in 2019, the studio has released an average of two live-action series per year, the most recent being the controversial and now-canceled Star Wars: The Acolyte. That's a total of eight different seasons of Star Wars TV shows on Disney+ since 2019. However, it looks like this is about to change, as Disney will reportedly reduce the number of its live-action Star Wars TV show releases.
Disney is allegedly planning to change its TV strategy for the upcoming Star Wars series. Insider Daniel Richtman shared that Lucasfilm is expected to reduce the number of live-action TV shows it releases annually from two to one starting in 2025. However, he clarified that the studio won’t stop making TV series, as there is a lot in development; it will simply reduce its output.
“I'm hearing that several series are in development, but it seems they plan to release only one live-action series per year starting in 2025,” he said.
This claim seems to be in line with Disney’s new media strategy as a whole. Back in May, it revealed it would also reduce Marvel TV series and film releases yearly. However, compared to Lucasfilm’s one show per year, CEO Bob Iger revealed Marvel’s output would be two TV series and a maximum of three movies annually. This move is said to be part of the House of Mouse’s plan to focus on quality over quantity.
What are the upcoming Star Wars TV shows on Disney+?
After Lucasfilm released the eight-episode The Acolyte in June on Disney+, a couple of other Star Wars TV shows are waiting in line. The company has already started promoting its new Amblin-style coming-of-age story, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, which will see Jude Law’s debut in the galaxy, galaxy far away as the mysterious Force user Jod Na Wood, and his group of young crew. Skeleton Crew is slated to release on December 3.
Of course, the much-awaited second and final season of Star Wars: Andor is also coming. The much-loved series will feature a four-year time jump to get closer to the events of the critically acclaimed Gareth Edwards' 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Andor Season 2 is expected to be released in 2025.
This list will never be complete without Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2. After several months of waiting, Lucasfilm has finally confirmed that Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, and Ezra Bridger will return to continue their fight against Grand Admiral Thrawn. However, Disney has yet to reveal when the second season will be released.
With the number of TV shows and movies Lucasfilm has on its plate, it’s only reasonable that it will decrease its releases. Although the anticipation will be longer than usual, with Disney’s plan to focus on quality, fans can be assured that these shows will be worth seeing.
