After sharing a photo of Jared Leto’s Joker from the 2016 Suicide Squad, David Ayer is back on Twitter to deny the claims that James Gunn will release his version of the superhero film’s director’s cut. The #ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign, which fans have been rallying for since 2017, seems to return to life after Ayer teased that Gunn would release a “better cut” of his movie.

Ayer’s Suicide Squad is the third installment in the DC Extended Universe, following Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). It introduced a plethora of characters, though Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn became the most notable. However, with all the issues surrounding the movie, from the turmoil behind the scenes to its version not being what Ayer wanted to make, many want to see its director’s cut. In fact, with the success of the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement that involved Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2017), fans started the #ReleaseTheAyerCut campaign, hoping Ayer’s Suicide Squad Director’s Cut would be released, too.

Ayer addressed a tweet by Release the Ayer Cut Twitter page, claiming there is a bunch of news articles that say Gunn is planning to release Suicide Squad Director’s Cut before he starts rebooting the DC Universe in 2025. “Silly rumor. Not true,” he tweeted.

David Ayer Left Fans Confused of the Suicide Squad Director’s Cut Release

However, Ayer’s response to the Suicide Squad Director’s Cut release rumor seems to leave fans confused after claiming that he had spoken with Gunn, who told him the Ayer Cut would be shared in time. He even teased that his unseen version of the film was “much better than the studio release.”

He said:

The interest in my cut being shown seems real and organic. And [James] Gunn told me it would have its time to be shared.

Ayer seemed to understand why Gunn, who became DC Studios’ co-chairman and co-CEO along with Peter Safran in 2022, was hesitant to release Suicide Squad Director’s Cut. “He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects,” he explained.
