Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is bringing back one of Night City's most famous background faces. Hideo Kojima will reprise his Cyberpunk 2077 cameo role as braindance director Hideyoshi Oshima in the second season of the Netflix anime, which premieres tomorrow, October 20.
The official Cyberpunk: Edgerunners account announced the return today, writing: "You may remember seeing him in Konpeki Plaza during The Heist in 2077. Now, the renowned braindance director is making another appearance in Night City." Kojima voices the character himself, just as he did in the game.
The Konpeki Plaza Cameo, Explained
Oshima is one of Cyberpunk 2077's most missable Easter eggs — and one of its most talked about. Kojima appears as Hideyoshi Oshima, a braindance producer from Tokyo visiting Night City, and players can find him in the Konpeki Plaza bar during The Heist, the game's signature early mission, sitting at a back table and talking about his work. The character is modeled on Kojima's own likeness and voiced by him, and in-universe he makes braindances — full-sensory recordings of other people's experiences — with a focus on emotional connection rather than the salacious content the medium is known for.
How large a role Oshima plays in the new season has not been revealed, but the announcement makes clear it is a genuine appearance rather than just his likeness.
Kojima's Cyberpunk Roots Run Deep
The cameo is a natural fit for a creator whose career started in the genre. Before Metal Gear made him famous, Kojima created Snatcher, a cyberpunk visual novel first released in Japan in 1988 that remains a cult classic, and his studio's Death Stranding series leans on the same themes of connection that Oshima's braindances are built around. The Cyberpunk 2077 version of Oshima even sits near a Death Stranding Easter egg players can find later in the game.
What Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 About?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is the second season of the cyberpunk action anime from CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger, set in the world of the Cyberpunk 2077 video game. The first season followed street kid David Martinez as chrome, ambition and Night City itself consumed him, and it became one of Netflix's most acclaimed anime on its way to winning Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The new season tells a standalone story instead of continuing David's, putting a chromeless legend and a vengeful nomad on a collision course across 10 episodes — with Oshima's appearance tying the season back to the game that started it all.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres on Netflix on October 20 — and now it carries a cameo worth pausing the episode for.
