Brie Larson’s Marvel Future Reportedly Put in Question After Backlash

Brie Larson has allegedly "grown disillusioned" with working with Marvel Studios.

Since Brie Larson landed a Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, she has been a target of a misogynistic smear campaign. Her casting resulted in a huge backlash, with the online trolls mocking her nonstop. This toxic reaction from fans and critics alike may have gotten on The Marvels star’s nerves, reportedly putting her Marvel future into question.

Larson made her MCU debut in the 2019 Captain Marvel, making her the first female Marvel superhero to have her own solo movie. Seeing a woman portraying a superhero role who was originally a man outraged the toxic fans, making her a subject of sexist comments.

In the book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, author Joanna Robinson claimed Larson has “grown disillusioned” with working with Marvel Studios. Disillusioned means being disappointed in something one believes to be good.

In an excerpt from the book, Robinson said the future of the Marvel icons “was unclear.” The main stars, like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johnson, have already left the franchise, adding to that is the shocking demise of Chadwick Boseman. Other MCU stalwarts, like Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana, have also made their way out.

“The Guardians of the Galaxy cast went on a farewell tour, Brie Larson grew disillusioned, and Marvel tussled with Sony in a custody battle over Tom Holland,” she continued. Though she said in a 2019 interview with Variety that she didn’t have time for this backlash, this revelation seemed to prove she was affected by it.

Will Brie Larson reprise her MCU role after The Marvels?

At the D23 Expo in September 2022, Larson answered how long she planned to play her Marvel role as Captain Marvel. “I don’t know. Does anyone want me to do it again?” she told Variety. Alternatively, Robinson claimed that the 34-year-old didn’t want to reprise her role on The Ringer's The Watch podcast due to the toxic backlash.

So far, it remains to be seen if Larson will leave or continuously play the role of Captain Marvel in the MCU. The actress has yet to talk about it, so unless she says she’s done, that’s the only time all these claims will be proven true, or she has other reasons. The Marvels will hit the theaters on November 10.
