X-Men '97 continuously stuns fans with its major turn of events, from Magneto becoming the new X-Men leader to Storm losing her powers to the deaths of several main characters. The series is just halfway through its first season, and more revelations may be coming the viewers' way until its scheduled end on May 15. But as the reboot has already been confirmed to have second and third seasons, co-composer Taylor Newton Stewart, one-half of the composing duo The Newton Brothers, teases a “pretty intense” X-Men ‘97 Season 2.
In an interview with The Direct, Stewart confirmed that he and his composing partner, John Andrew Grush, would return to X-Men ‘97 Season 2 as series composers again. He revealed they’re working on the second season, though they haven’t officially started yet. From there, he teased what he knew about the show’s return.
“I know, a little bit of the storylines and characters, which we haven't actually got into writing it,” he said.
Despite keeping things about X-Men ‘97 Season 2 under wraps, Stewart couldn’t help but excite fans with what they’re about to see. If the revival is already matching, not to mention surpassing the original X-Men: The Animated Series, he promised the second season would raise the stakes.
“It's always upping the ante. I mean, it's pretty intense what happens,” he continued. “Yeah, immediately when I was told, I was just like, 'Oh my gosh, what's happening? This is incredible.' So, as a fan, just as a fan alone, I am very excited.”
Will there be X-Men ‘97 Season 3?
With only five episodes left, fans can’t help but wonder if their favorite X-Men’s story will have a chance to continue, especially with the positive response it receives. X-Men: The Animated Series ran for five seasons before officially concluding in September 1997. Though it remains to be seen how many seasons X-Men ‘97 will have, producer Brad Winderbaum just revealed Season 3 is already in development.
In an interview with Comicbook’s Phase Zero podcast in March, Winderbaum confirmed that they were already in the animatic phase of the second season and continuously developing the story. Aside from that, they were also developing X-Men '97Season 3, though he didn’t reveal much details about it.
He continued that the sequel would remain faithful to the original show even if it explored story arcs beyond the comics. He also acknowledged the contribution of the former showrunner, Beau DeMayo, for finishing writing X-Men ’97 Season 2 before he was fired ahead of the first season’s premiere in March.
“Just like the original series that was drafting so heavily from Chris Claremont's work, we're continuing that,” Winderbaum explained. “We're looking at that late '70s, mid '70s to early '90s kind of era. We do start to play outside of the Chris Claremont sandbox a little bit into the '90s, almost getting to Grant Morrison. But it's definitely just like the OG series; it's drafting from the stories from the books.”
X-Men ‘97 Episodes 1 to 5 are now streaming on Disney+. New episodes are scheduled to be released every Wednesday. Are you excited to see the second season? If the first season is already putting you on the edge of your seat, wait for what the next installment offers.
