Seventeen years after it became the breakout co-op hit of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, The Last Stand is coming home. A new 30-minute Battlefield Report gameplay video puts the horde survival mode front and center for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV, with three Commanders holding out against wave after wave of enemies.

An announcement from Deep Silver and KING Art Games unveiled the deep dive on November 5, walking through the mode's survive, upgrade and repeat loop in a full developer playthrough. Game Director Jan Theysen, QA Lead Orvi Thummel and Senior Game Designer Elliott Verbiest played the mode themselves, testing their strategies against the waves while showing off its new mechanics, customization options and tactical depth.

Across its half hour, the Battlefield Report follows the developers through two full attempts at the mode. Their first run ends in defeat as the enemy forces grow stronger, and the team heads back in with adjusted equipment and strategies for a second try. The developers admit that "Surviving all 20 waves is not going to be easy, even for the development team."

True to its origins, The Last Stand teams three players up as powerful Commanders and asks them to survive 20 increasingly challenging waves of enemies. Each Commander carries a customizable selection of weapons, armour and abilities into the arena. Across a single playthrough, a Commander can gain up to 30 levels, unlocking dozens of skills and equipment along the way.

Commanders no longer fight alone in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV, because each one now leads a Strikeforce of up to four Companion units into battle. Every Companion unit brings its own specializations to unlock, opening tactical combinations the original mode never had. Deployment points are limited, though, so players must weigh powerful Commander abilities against extra units and deployable defences.

Survival is only part of the challenge, since runs are also scored on how quickly waves are cleared, how long Commanders remain standing and how effectively the team controls strategic locations across the battlefield. Holding those locations matters beyond points, because they provide valuable supplies that can be used to heal damaged squads. Each run also rewards experience that unlocks new wargear, abilities and units, widening the options for the next attempt instead of simply raising a Commander's base stats.

Five Commanders will be playable when the mode launches, representing all four factions, including both the Blood Ravens and Dark Angels Space Marine Chapters. More Commanders are already planned to arrive after launch as free DLC. The announcement sums up the expanded package as "More units, more wargear, more skills, more ways to battle in this ultimate gauntlet."
