One of webtoon's biggest hits is getting the anime treatment. During its showcase panel at New York Comic Con 2026 on October 8, Crunchyroll announced a 2027 TV anime adaptation of The Remarried Empress, revealing the main cast, key staff, character art, and an English-subtitled announcement trailer all at once.

Crunchyroll made the announcement on stage at NYCC, with the official anime website posting the full reveal the following day. The series will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll in select territories. Watch the announcement trailer here:

The main cast brings together some familiar voices:

  • Yoko Hikasa (Neely in Sentenced to Be a Hero) as Navier

  • Ryohei Kimura (Bokuto in Haikyu!!) as Heinrey

  • Tomoaki Maeno (White Blood Cell in Cells at Work!) as Sovieshu

  • Reina Ueda (Kanao in Demon Slayer) as Rashta

Behind the scenes, Tetsuya Yanagisawa (Berserk of Gluttony, Orient) directs, with series composition and scripts by Akiko Inoue, character designs by Jun Nakai (NieR:Automata Ver1.1a), and music by Yuuki Fukazawa. Animation production comes from TROYCA, with HAYATE — the joint venture between Aniplex and Crunchyroll — leading production.

The anime is part of a much bigger play. Crunchyroll, HAYATE, and LINE Digital Frontier Corporation — a subsidiary of WEBTOON Entertainment — announced a co-production partnership to develop and produce around 15 WEBTOON series as anime adaptations, with HAYATE leading development and Crunchyroll streaming the results exclusively in select territories. The same NYCC panel also announced anime adaptations of The Boxer and Teenage Mercenary.

The original webtoon creators also contributed new illustrations that include their handwritten congratulatory notes.

What is The Remarried Empress about?

The story began as a web novel by Alphatart, serialized from November 2018 to March 2020, before Sumpul's manhwa adaptation launched on Naver Webtoon in October 2019. The English digital edition runs on WEBTOON, with print volumes licensed by Ize Press — 11 physical volumes as of August 2026. The series has amassed over 2.9 billion global views and been translated into 10 languages, making it one of the most successful romance webtoons ever.

Here's an official synopsis of the series from Yen Press:

Empress Navier and Emperor Sovieshu: a match made in heaven, they were the two pillars of the land whom everyone believed would stand by each other through thick and thin…until a chance encounter with a beautiful girl in the forest leaves the emperor smitten! Though hurt by the betrayal, Navier’s not one to waste time wallowing in despair. And when Sovieshu requests a divorce, she has but one condition in return—permission to remarry the man of her choosing!

The timing could not be better for fans. A live-action Disney+ adaptation premieres November 4, 2026 — just weeks away — starring Shin Min-a as Navier, Ju Ji-hoon as Sovieshu, Lee Jong-suk as Heinrey, and Lee Se-young as Rashta. Its teaser pulled 11.7 million views in 24 hours, a record for a Korean Disney+ original trailer. The 10-episode series drops its first four episodes on November 4, with two more each Wednesday through November 25.
