One of the most exciting things about The Marvels in the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of South Korean superstar Park Seo-joon but his role in the upcoming comic book film is still a huge mystery. Luckily, we're finally learning more about Park's important role in the sequel. Additionally, it looks like he will be playing a valuable ally to Carol Danvers.
There are a lot of speculations about Park Seo-joon's character in The Marvels since the casting was announced in 2021. Although it was believed that Park will be playing Amadeus Cho aka Brawn, later reports reveal that he may have been cast as someone who shares a strange history with Carol Danvers.
But who is Park Seo-joon playing in The Marvels? Director Nia DaCosta may have revealed the truth during an interview with Total Film magazine (via The Direct). In the interview, DaCosta pointed out that Park plays someone with close ties to Brie Larson's superhero.
"His character is really awesome, and [it's] really fun when you realise his relationship to our hero," she said of Park. The director also pointed out that The Marvels will explore new planets including Aladna, the home of Park's character.
"The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it's ['The Marvels' is] really wacky and silly. The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds unlike others you've seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven't seen before," DaCosta said.
This might not sound like much but the director's comments about Park and his homeworld seem to confirm that he is playing Prince Yan of Aladna. In the comics, Prince Yan has a close connection to Carol as the two were actually married according to the planet's customs. It is unclear if we'll get to see the epic wedding but there is little doubt that Prince Yan will be helping his wife later this year.
The Marvels will star Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. They will be joined by Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, and Samuel L. Jackson. The film is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 10, 2023.
