The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady's Treasure Trailer Puts Ruòqíng and Yinshan at the Heart of the Mystery

A consort dead five years, a body that never decayed — Ruòqíng and Yinshan hold the keys to The Apothecary Diaries' first film.

The final character trailer for The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady's Treasure goes straight to the heart of the film's mystery. The fourth and last of the daily character trailers introduces Ruòqíng, the consort who died in the inner palace five years ago, and Yinshan, the head maid who once served her — the two original characters around whom the entire film revolves.

The trailer was posted through the film's official website, closing a four-day rollout that began with Maomao and Jinshi's trailer on October 11 and continued with the Mi clan and the Snake gang. Both Ruòqíng and Yinshan were created specifically for the film, which tells an original story drafted by series author Natsu Hyuuga rather than adapting an existing arc.

Ruòqíng is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, known to anime fans as the voice of Fujiko Mine in Lupin the 3rd. A mid-rank consort in life, Ruòqíng is now the film's central enigma: Jinshi has been ordered to grant her dying wish and return her to her homeland — only for her body to be found perfectly preserved, as if she were still alive. Sawashiro described the recording as a luxurious experience in which new interpretations of the character kept emerging in the studio, and she invited audiences to discover in theaters who these characters truly are.

Yinshan is voiced by Ai Mikami, in only her second anime film role following Rita in ALL YOU NEED IS KILL. Yinshan served as Ruòqíng's head maid, placing her closest to the late consort and to whatever secrets surround her death. Mikami, who won Newcomer of the Year at the 49th Japan Academy Film Prize for the live-action film Kokuho, was already a fan of the television series before her casting. She described the film as a grand-scale puzzle-solving mystery that fans of the anime and novels, as well as newcomers, will be able to enjoy.

What is The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady's Treasure about?

The film is the first feature entry in the franchise, built around an original story by Natsu Hyuuga, author of the light novels that began in 2011. The television anime premiered in October 2023, with its third season now airing, and the film reunites director Norihiro Naganuma and TOHO animation STUDIO with leads Aoi Yuuki as Maomao and Takeo Ootsuka as Jinshi.

Jinshi must grant the dying wish of a concubine who died in the rear palace five years ago — to return her to her homeland. But when her body is examined before being sent home, it lies perfectly preserved, as if she were still alive. Maomao accompanies Jinshi to Mi-Nan Province in the south, where water bandits rampage over hidden treasure and a major incident erupts on the day of the concubine's funeral.
