Absolute power has never looked this fragile in the new Sword & Silence character stills.

The doomed final century of Goguryeo takes center stage in a new batch of character stills from KBS 2TV's upcoming historical epic Sword & Silence, spotlighting the war hero, the king who fears him, and the loyalists caught between them.

KBS 2TV's new stills lay out the tangled loyalties surrounding Jang Hyuk's Yeon Gae-so-mun, a war god of Goguryeo whose combat skill built his legend and whose ruthlessness built his power. Born into a family that controlled Goguryeo's military for three generations, Yeon Gae-so-mun grows increasingly autocratic as his influence creeps toward the throne itself.

That ambition puts him on a collision course with King Go Geon-mu, played by Cho Seong-ha. Go Geon-mu schemes to eliminate Yeon Gae-so-mun and restore royal authority, but the general sees the plot coming and strikes back, leaving the king in danger. Their rivalry, as the production frames it, is a confrontation that will change the fate of Goguryeo.

A second thread follows Go Yeon-mu, played by Baek Sung-hyun, a general whose loyalty to his sovereign never wavers even when his life is on the line. Impressed by that devotion, Yeon Gae-so-mun spares him, but when Go Yeon-mu refuses to become his man, the warlord exiles him to Liaodong. While Go Yeon-mu holds the frontier for a kingdom in chaos, Yeon Gae-so-mun seizes full power and prepares for a bloody war against Tang China. The two generals walk different paths, yet both fight for Goguryeo.

At the height of his power, Yeon Gae-so-mun installs King Bo-jang, played by Hong Kyung-in, on the throne to control the royal court. Bo-jang is a powerless puppet who can only watch as his kingdom crumbles around him.

After Yeon Gae-so-mun's death, the tragedy turns inward. His sons, Yeon Nam-saeng (Kim Aaron) and Yeon Nam-geon (Jung Ji-hwan), let their hidden hunger for power explode into a full civil war, draining the kingdom's strength and pushing Goguryeo one step closer to its fall.

The production team said the series will trace both Silla's glory and Goguryeo's painful collapse as one sweeping epic, adding, "The stories of Goguryeo's key figures, who faced the turbulent storms of history head-on, will powerfully portray the tragic narratives and the futility of absolute power that once held the world in its grip."

Sword & Silence (문무) dramatizes how the small kingdom of Silla overcame the stronger states of Goguryeo and Baekje, along with Tang China, to unify the Three Kingdoms. The drama spans six centuries of war and upheaval through leaders who gamble everything on a single victory. Lee Hyun-wook plays Kim Pom-min, the man who becomes Silla's 30th king, alongside Kim Kang-woo as Kim Chun-chu and Park Sung-woong as Kim Yu-sin.

The series is directed by Kim Yeong-jo of Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth, with scripts by Kim Ri-heon and Hong Jin-i. It is KBS's first grand historical drama in about three years and is produced by KeyEast and Monster Union.
