Before the first three episodes of Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 3 dropped on Disney+ last week, Lucasfilm surprised everyone when it released its trailer featuring the return of Asajj Ventress in January. Nobody saw it coming, and the least of fans’ expectations. As the producers earlier revealed that they want to explore the Jedi Padawan’s story, they now hint at the series’ connection to the 2015 novel Star Wars: Dark Disciple through Ventress' appearance.

Many believe that Ventress died in Dark Disciple after working with the Jedi to confront Count Dooku and sacrificing herself to save Quinlan Von. However, The Bad Batch Season 3 proves that the Sith assassin is alive, and she’s back with a head full of hair. But aside from her surprising return, it looks like the series’ final season has a deeper story to tell.

In an interview with Comicbook, the show’s producer, Brad Rau, revealed that they quickly did their research after learning they could include the character in the series and went back to the unfinished arcs of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was inspired by Dark Disciple. There, they saw the designs created for her, from her hairstyle to her lightsaber and its color, and decided to honor those when she finally appeared in the third season. Though he couldn’t explain further, Rau promised to answer the fans’ questions.

We can say the answers to your questions – and we know a lot of fans are asking questions – will be answered. They may not all be answered in The Bad Batch , but rest assured, the connections are all there, and they will be told. So, just hang tight.

What is Asajj Ventress’ role in Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 3?

Though the producers didn’t exactly reveal what is Ventress’ role in The Bad Batch Season 3, Rau’s co-producer Jennifer Corbett added that they had a storyline for her. This narrative needed “someone,” and they saw the bounty hunter as a perfect fit for the role. However, including Ventress in the series required a lot of work.

“Brad [Rau] and I don't make these decisions. It's very much a conversation,” she said.

So, when she was finally put on the table, they couldn’t hide their excitement as big fans of this character. And to give justice to her return, they wanted to honor what her character was like in Clone Wars “while also honoring Dark Disciple.”
