Following the 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker’s journey continues in Spider-Man 4. Details about the new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie have remained scarce. However, the latest reports suggest that the film is back on track after being delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. In fact, it has received several exciting claims, including allegedly having a new director, Justin Lin.
Insider Jeff Sneider claimed in his The InSneider that the Fast 9 and Star Trek Beyond director Lin is being eyed to direct Spider-Man 4 for Sony and Marvel Studios. Allegedly, it will start filming later this year, either in September or October, though it remains to be seen if the Taiwanese American filmmaker will indeed helm the film. However, knowing that he only directs large-scale studio blockbusters, the claims that this film will be a relatively small-scale affair due to his status quo in the larger MCU will defy Lin’s caliber.
In addition, Sneider also revealed that Zendaya would return to reprise her role as MJ. The Spider-Man follow-up would be the first on her plate, as she reportedly intended to do the photography of Euphoria Season 3 sometime after the movie. Of course, Tom Holland would also return as Pater Parker despite his conflicting feelings about continuing to play the role of the fan-favorite Webslinger for the fourth time in his own film and the seventh time since he debuted in the 2016 Captain America: Civil War.
“I want to protect his legacy,” Holland told Collider in November 2023. “So, I won't make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”.
What to Expect from Spider-Man 4
Though details about Spider-Man 4’s storyline remain locked and key, insider Alex Perez claimed in a Discord Q&A session via CBR that Peter would have a less prominent role in his alter ego’s life. After the first trilogy established “his origin in the MCU,” the lengthy recap of his appearances revealed that all these things that had happened would lead to the “next chapter in his story.”
Hence, after No Way Home closed the door on the high school chapter of his life, Perez revealed that the next plan was to “give him a sense of independence.” This time, Peter would slowly be gone, while Spider-Man would continue to live on.
“Since he has either lost or detached himself from everyone he's ever loved, all he has to keep him going is being Spider-Man, whether the city loves him for it or not,” he explained. “And as the title of Spider-Man continues to consume Peter's life little by little, Peter Parker will take a back seat and continue to fade from existence slowly. This story point can be compared to Robert Pattinson’s Batman in The Batman.”
As Marvel has yet to confirm these new claims, fans are advised to take these assumptions with a grain of salt. What is important is that Spider-Man 4 is now back on track after it was first announced to be in development in December 2021. So far, there are also no words about its release date.
