New stills from the upcoming MBC psychological thriller The Perfect Lie show Seo Hyun-jin caught in a heavy downpour, her character's composure cracking as the drama's central mystery closes in. The images, released on October 7, offer the most emotionally charged look yet at the series ahead of its October 30 premiere.
As unveiled by MBC, the stills capture Kang Ji-sun — played by Seo Hyun-jin — stepping out into pouring rain without an umbrella, her long hair soaked as she walks with an unwavering expression. Another frame shows her sitting in the driver's seat of a car, staring silently through the rain while lost in thought. The production team said Seo Hyun-jin conveyed the character's psychological pressure through her eyes and expression alone, leaving viewers to wonder what has happened to Kang Ji-sun — and why she is pouring out her emotions in the middle of a storm.
What is The Perfect Lie about?
The Perfect Lie (Korean title Liar) is a psychological thriller built around a single, slippery premise: a man and a woman give completely opposite accounts of the same memory, and their search for the truth sends them on a collision course. MBC's Friday–Saturday series is directed by Jo Young-min of You and Everything Else and written by Baek Jae-young, with production by Film House Zip and Kakao Entertainment.
Seo Hyun-jin plays Kang Ji-sun, an elementary school librarian and teacher who insists that her version of events is the truth. Kang Ji-sun is unusually perceptive — she looks past what people say and reads the intentions hidden behind their words. Her quiet, ordinary life is upended after a seemingly perfect first date with Min Joon-ho, played by Yoo Yeon-seok. When the two offer conflicting accounts of what happened that night, their disagreement hardens into a tense confrontation over whose memory is real.
Yoo Yeon-seok plays Min Joon-ho, a respected cardiac surgeon and a father raising his son alone after the death of his wife. Where Kang Ji-sun claims to know the truth, Min Joon-ho is described as the man who tells the facts — and the drama's tension comes from the possibility that only one of them can be right. Earlier stills released this week leaned into Min Joon-ho's warmer side, showing his playful affection for his son, before a final frame caught his expression hardening with shock — a hint of the crisis waiting after the date.
The production team praised Seo Hyun-jin's handling of a role they described as demanding wide emotional swings, noting that she carefully calibrated the intensity of her performance to the flow of the story. They pointed to her immersion and energy on set and asked viewers to follow Kang Ji-sun's emotional journey closely as it unfolds.
The new stills mark a sharp tonal shift from the first character images released on October 1, which showed Kang Ji-sun smiling warmly at her students in a sunlit classroom. The drama's first teaser pushed even further in the other direction, with Seo Hyun-jin snapping that she is not lying — a line that frames the central question the series keeps circling: of the two leads, who is actually telling the truth?
The Perfect Lie also marks a reunion a decade in the making. Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin last shared the screen in SBS's Dr. Romantic in 2017, where their characters grew from colleagues into lovers. This time, the chemistry runs in the opposite direction — the two are locked in a psychological battle, and the drama's posters and teasers lean into the premise that one of them must be lying.
The supporting cast includes Ok Ja-yeon as detective Lee Hwa-young, Im Seong-jae as her husband Park Seok-gu, Kim Ji-hyun as Kang Ji-sun's older sister Kang Ji-eun, and Lee Chun-hee as Kim Hyung-soo.
The Perfect Lie premieres October 30 at 9:50 p.m. KST on MBC. A North American streaming platform has not been announced yet.
