Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 Gets a Disappointing Update from Ewan McGregor

It looks like Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 won't be in development anytime soon.

Ewan McGregor continued the journey of one of his most famous characters, Obi-Wan Kenobi, in the eponymous show on Disney+ 17 years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. After releasing it to great success, receiving positive reviews and critical acclaim, many are now waiting for Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2. However, it looks like it will not happen soon after McGregor gives a disappointing update.

Like fans, McGregor is also looking forward to doing Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2, but neither Lucasfilm nor Disney has given it a greenlight. More than a year after the first season ended, there are no talks about the show’s return yet, and the series’ lead star himself confirms this.

“I would love to do the second season, but there's no talk of it yet,” McGregor said in a panel at Göteborg Film Festival (via Variety). “There is a lot going on at Disney.”

It looks like Disney is busy putting its focus on other projects; thus, Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 may not be the priority. Four Star Wars shows are coming to its streamer in 2024: Acolyte, Skeleton Crew, The Bad Batch Season 3, and Tales of the Jedi Season 2. That said, it remains to be seen if McGregor will take on the role of the beloved Jedi Master again and when it will finally happen.

Will there be Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2?

Though Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to renew the series, there’s still a big chance that Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 will be in the works. The studio president Kathleen Kennedy admitted to Variety at Star Wars Celebration 2023 that a second season wasn’t an “active development.” Still, she gave fans hope when she said, “I never say never.”

Kennedy revealed there would always be a possibility for a new season after the show was well-received by fans and its director, Deborah Chow, did a good job. She added McGregor was eager to return to the series and do another installment. It was just that the studio had a lot on its plate with the number of projects they announced at the celebration, from the new Daisy Ridley Star Wars movie to Skeleton Crew and more. “We’ll turn our attention to that again, maybe down the road,” she teased.

Alternatively, Chow told The Hollywood Reporter that McGregor was already pitching ideas for Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 as soon as they finished their last shot. She believed there would be another decade of stories to tell, and the project wasn’t off the board yet. Though she knew it was only a limited series, she stressed they were in a “never say never situation.”
