Netflix released its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender almost six years after announcing its reimagined remake in September 2018. With all the hard work, everything finally paid off after the series started to dominate the streamer with over 21 million views despite the critics' mixed reviews. So, with a successful first season and a major cliffhanger in the finale, many wonder if the show will return for a second season. And if a new report has anything to go by, it looks like Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is now in the works.
Forbes revealed that Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is already being worked on in the writers’ room and has been happening for several months. Though Netflix has yet to confirm anything officially, it’s a strong indication that the show will be renewed, and starting the writing work this early is seen as a move to shorten the waiting period between the two seasons—a recurring problem that many streaming series experience.
The show’s success is another hint that Aang may return to master all four elements and face the Fire Nation. For the week of February 19-25, the series topped Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV in English with 153 million hours viewed and 21.2 million views—a far cry from One Day’s 7.5 million views. It’s even the No. 1 TV show in 92 countries.

How did Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender hint at the second season?
Warning: Major spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk.
Another hint that Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 is happening is how the first season ended. The first season finale ended with a few cliffhangers. After Pakku deems Katara as the water master, she may start training Aang in the second season, or the two may work together to improve their waterbending abilities. Katara also must learn other sub-skills, like icebending.
In the case of Fire Nation, the final episode showed Princess Azula conquering the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu. The second season may explore her journey as she works hard to please her father, Lord Ozai. However, as the next installment is expected to adapt the animated series Book Two: Earth, it may feature the story of Prince Zuko and what he’s set to become after Commander Zhao makes a big revelation about his sister and his family.
Also, as the last scene shows the coming of Sozin’s Comet, it just reveals the Fire Nation’s power will incredibly increase. This may mean that Lord Ozai may cull the nation’s traitors and failures alike, and his soldiers will be unstoppable as they continue the Hundred Year War and conquer the world. As the series’ showrunner and executive producer Albert Kim described it as a “ticking clock” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Aang has to do everything to stop the Fire Nation before it’s too late.
