Netflix has given a closer look at the Straw Hat Pirates’ crew in a new behind-the-scenes clip for the upcoming live-action adaptation of One Piece. Led by Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, the cast reveals the work they have done to bring Eiichiro Oda’s masterpiece onto the small screen and teases what fans are about to see. As they all promise, viewers are about to experience this legendary story like never before.

Started as a manga series in July 1997, One Piece has spawned a huge media franchise that sees a number of animated feature films, video animation, TV specials, and, of course, a long-running anime series. And 26 years after its serialization, a live-action TV series is about to be seen.

The clip features on-set interviews conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began. It starts with Luffy saying that the sea has been calling since he was a kid. For Godoy, the One Piece live-action will be “very exciting for everyone” as it will reveal the fan-favorite characters and the world of this epic-fantasy series to life.

In addition, Mackenyu, who plays Zoro, deems One Piece as the most popular pirate manga in the whole world. Emily Rudd, who portrays Nami, describes the series as an adventure that features their core group, the Straw Hat Pirates.

Lastly, Jacob Romero reveals the importance of “chasing after your dreams and standing up for what you think is right” as he plays his character Usopp. You can watch the behind-the-scenes clip below:

What does the One Piece crew say about the live-action?

The featurette also reveals showrunner/executive producer Matt Owens’ hopes for the One Piece live-action. “For this series, we wanted to bring the manga created by Oda sensei into a new medium and to new audiences,” he says.

Stunt coordinator Franz Spilhaus also teases that the upcoming TV series will be a “stunt-driven show.” He even reveals Mackenyu already has a style of his own with his expertise in katana when he starts shooting One Piece.

What do the One Piece cast say about their characters?

Talking about their roles, Mackenyu reveals Zoro has always been his favorite character, especially since he grew up with One Piece. “It’s an honor to be wearing those swords,” he says.

Rudd admits she’s biased toward Nami, describing her as the “cool, calm, collected cat burglar of the group.” “It’s been truly amazing playing this role,” she adds.

Moreover, Romero details his character as a sniper and storyteller who helps to keep everyone’s spirits up. Lastly, Taz Skylar, who will be seen as Sanji, reveals that he learned to cook and fight for the show. With these revelations, the cast just hypes up the series more.
