Mash Burnedead's next challenge will not be drawn at all. A live-action movie adaptation of MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES has been announced, bringing Hajime Komoto's muscle-powered comedy to the big screen with real actors in the robes of Easton Magic Academy.
The announcement arrived with a "super teaser visual" and a short message for the hero himself: "It's finally time for a movie adaptation, Mash." Warner Bros. is producing the film with the participation of CREDEUS, the production company behind the live-action Kingdom films, SAKAMOTO DAYS and the kabuki drama Kokuhou.
The teaser visual keeps its star hidden on purpose. It shows a lone figure from behind, mid-stride in a long dark robe with a gold emblem on the back, gripping a small black dumbbell in one hand against a misty blue-grey backdrop. The red MASHLE logo sits in the lower left, with the release timing marked in red at the lower right.
That hidden face is the announcement's real hook, because the film has not named its lead yet. The actor playing Mash Burnedead is scheduled to be revealed on November 5, turning the casting of a magic-less strongman into the production's first headline of its own.
No director or further cast has been announced so far. What the project has instead is a production pairing with a track record in exactly this kind of adaptation, since CREDEUS has already carried major manga properties, including the Kingdom series, into live action.
The November 5 reveal carries unusual weight because Mash is a physical role before anything else. The character's comedy runs on a deadpan face, impossible strength and cream puffs, so the visual's single dumbbell reads like a promise about the kind of performance the film is shopping for.
What is MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES about?
Both VIZ Media's Shonen Jump service and Shueisha's MANGA Plus service published the manga digitally in English. VIZ Media is also releasing the manga in print. Shueisha describes the manga:
This is a world of magic where magic is used for everything. But deep in the forest exists a young man who spends his time training and bulking up. He can't use magic, but he enjoys a peaceful life with his father. But one day, his life is put in danger! Will his muscular body protect him from the magic users who are out to get him? Powerfully trained muscles crush magic as this abnormal magical fantasy begins!
The anime side of the franchise is mid-stride at the same time. MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES returns with its third season, The Tri-Magicathlon Divine Visionary Final Exam Arc, in January 2027, animated by A-1 Pictures with the season streaming on Crunchyroll.
That puts a new anime season and a live-action movie inside the same quarter, a double push few comedy franchises get. Between the two, the first quarter of 2027 is shaping up to belong to Mash and his muscles.
The live-action MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES movie opens in Japan on March 19, 2027. No international release plans have been announced.
