One of the first and most shocking things about Secret Invasion was the unexpected death of Maria Hill. Although most fans were hoping that the beloved character would be revealed to have survived the premiere, it was later confirmed that Maria is officially dead and remembered as a hero. It was a controversial move for Marvel but the studio is clearly trying to make up for it by honoring Maria in a new social media post.
The official Marvel UK Instagram account decided to pay tribute to Maria Hill by sharing a heartwarming image from Secret Invasion. In the photo, Maria is shown reunited with longtime ally Nick Fury as they share a toast. "Here's to you, Maria Hill," the caption read.
Not surprisingly, fans were feeling emotional about the post. Several netizens demanded the return of Maria Hill while others called for justice for her death, claiming that it was totally uncalled for. While both sides are right in their own opinion, it is just satisfying to know that Maria got the tribute she deserves.
Cobie Smulders was only able to reprise her role in the premiere episode of Secret Invasion where the character helped Nick Fury in the search for Gravik. Talos' daughter G'iah has joined the rebellion and she reveals the plan to attack Vossoyedineniye Square on Unity Day. The rebels detonate a bomb within the crowd and in the ensuing chaos, Gravik disguises himself as Fury and kills Hill in front of the real Fury. Still, Smulders was credited in all six episodes of the series.
But is it possible that Maria will return in future MCU projects? For now, it seems that her fate has already been sealed. Nevertheless, fans are not giving up on the hope that Maria will return one day. In the meantime, all six episodes of Secret Invasion are now available for streaming on Disney+.
