Marvel Studios is taking its epic storytelling to a new level. In collaboration with ILM Immersive, the production company announced its first-ever interactive Disney+ original story based on What If…? Titled What If…? – An Immersive Story, it will let viewers be part of the Multiverse and join the immersive and innovative story through mixed reality.
However, though this idea may have excited fans, there’s a catch. What If…? – An Immersive Story will only be available as an app for the Apple Vision Pro and will only run for an hour. This new project promises to deliver advanced technology and an engaging experience, crossing between augmented and virtual reality.
Here, viewers won’t only play as a “Watcher” but participate in the adventurous story it will tell. They will also be able to interact with the world around them through their eyes and hands. To complete this different kind of experience, big Marvel Cinematic Universe fans will have the chance to see the new and iconic locations in the Multiverse and immerse themselves in stunning visuals and spatial audio.
Talking about this new project, executive producer and director Dave Bushore told Marvel that What If…? – An Immersive Story is the next evolution in how they would tell their stories. By the looks of it, the studio wants fans across generations to experience their storytelling live and join the adventure alongside their favorite Marvel heroes.
“As a kid, my favorite stories were about worlds beyond my own, advanced technologies, and heroes traveling across space and time,” he said. “This experience kicks the door open to the Marvel Universe, and it’s a glimpse of what I’ve been waiting for my whole life.”
Which Marvel characters will appear in What If…? – An Immersive Story?
As What If…? – An Immersive Story is set within the MCU, Apple Vision Pro users will meet different Marvel characters. Though the appearance of specific superheroes is not yet revealed, Marvel claimed viewers would meet Multiversal variants of their favorite characters. However, the key art for this story features the likes of Uatu, the Collector, Wong, Thanos, Wanda, Captain America, and Hush.
Story-wise, it will have something to do with the Infinity Stones and it looks like Wong will have a major role to play. He may teach viewers to perform Mystic Arts through different hand gestures while making decisions that involve the six powerful gem-like objects and their usage.

So far, Marvel has yet to reveal when What If…? – An Immersive Story will be released. It remains to be seen whether this will be a free app or must be purchased.
Truly, Marvel Studios has done something it has never done before, allowing fans to be part of the MCU and work together with their favorite superheroes in augmented reality. However, as this will only come exclusively to Apple Vision Pro, not everyone may get the chance to experience this.
