Rumiko Takahashi’s long-awaited supernatural series MAO has dropped a gripping new trailer confirming its television anime debut on April 4, 2026, with a full two-cour run airing continuously on NHK General TV.

The newly-released trailer provides an extended look at the story's atmospheric blend of historical Japan and modern elements, featuring intense action sequences against yokai threats, glimpses of the cursed exorcist Mao, and the time-displaced protagonist Nanoka. It also previews the opening theme song HEARTLOUD performed by the popular boy band Kis-My-Ft2, delivering an energetic and dramatic sound that complements the series' mix of romance, action, and supernatural intrigue. The ending theme, Juai (Cursed Love), by singer TRUE, offers a more haunting and emotional tone, hinting at the deeper curses and emotional bonds central to the plot.

The new key visual showcases key characters in a striking composition, emphasizing the Taisho-era aesthetic with dark, mystical undertones. Mao stands prominently with his cursed sword.

What is MAO anime about?

MAO is based on the ongoing manga by Rumiko Takahashi, the renowned creator behind classics such as Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, and Maison Ikkoku. Serialized in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday since 2019, the series combines elements of historical fantasy, horror, mystery, and romance. It draws inspiration from Taisho-era Japan (1912–1926), a period of rapid modernization mixed with lingering traditional beliefs in yokai and spirits.

The story follows Nanoka, a contemporary high school girl who accidentally passes through a portal into the Taisho period. There, she encounters Mao, a stoic exorcist burdened by ancient curses. Their meeting sparks a chain of events involving grotesque yokai, gruesome murders, and revelations about Nanoka's own emerging powers. As Nanoka travels between eras seeking answers, she becomes entangled in Mao's investigations and his personal struggles against demonic forces.

As summarized by VIZ Media, the English publisher of the manga:

Nanoka passes through a portal into the Taisho era, where exorcist Mao reluctantly rescues her from the jaws of a grotesque yokai. When Nanoka gets back to the present, she discovers she has some new, incredible abilities. She returns to the past looking for answers, only to get caught up in Mao’s investigation of a series of gruesome murders. As her questions about herself multiply, Nanoka learns that Mao is cursed by a cat demon named Byoki—and so is his sword. If anyone but Mao attempts to wield it, they are doomed. But when Mao’s life is in jeopardy, Nanoka picks up his blade and swings!
