In an interview with the Phase Zero podcast, What If..? Season 2 executive producer and writer A.C. Bradley claimed that the World Tree, which the God of Mischief had become after accepting his glorious purpose, wasn’t supposed to be part of the series until a “miracle” happened. When the animated show was being made, there was no Loki Season 2 yet, so it wasn’t revealed that Loki would become the God of Time yet.
Hence, he just wanted to show “some cool stuff” and then created an image showing the multiverse. However, something like that was already revealed in Loki Season 1 when it opened the gates for the multiverse.
Bradley explained:
So, when What If..? Season 2 showed The Watcher promising Captain Carter there would be plenty to see in the multiverse, she opened her eyes to the World Tree, where Loki now lives, which aligned with Loki Season 2 finale. Bradley described it as an “amazing and beautiful” painting of what some version of the multiverse could look like, making it the “biggest cosmic thing” fans had seen.
The Making of the World Tree in What If..? Season 2
Bradley revealed they had to do their version of World Tree in What If..? Season 2. However, when they asked them to do it, the live-action series was just working to design that shot. At the time, they were in situations where their deadlines matched, though theirs were more “rock solid.”
He added:
As this rarely happens, Bradley added that everything turned out great. Things just worked out for the two series at the last possible moment.
Will there be Loki Season 3?
So far, there are no words about whether there will be Loki Season 3, considering Disney initially plans to do MCU shows on Disney+ with only one or two seasons. However, the show’s producer, Kevin Wright, hinted at the possibility of it in an interview with TVLine in November 2023. Though they didn’t want to rush into a new season, he teased Loki’s adventure could continue, whether in a third iteration or a spinoff like Better Call Saul of Breaking Bad.
He said:
However, knowing how people have enjoyed Loki’s tale, he’s confident that other filmmakers will be interested in continuing to tell stories in this world. If there is more to tell about this show, Wright will definitely be up for it.
From the God of Mischief, Loki has become the God of Stories, which may end his ability to continue writing his own story. That said, it remains to be seen how Loki can continue now that its protagonist holds multiple timelines.
