Logan director James Mangold has officially confirmed that his upcoming untitled Star Wars movie will take place in the past when the Jedi Order wasn’t even established. The director also recently released his latest movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which did quite well at the box office on opening day.

Mangold talked about his upcoming Star Wars movie in the Happy Sad Confused podcast. During the interview, he explained that the upcoming movie about the dawn of the Jedi will follow the story of the Force users, who refuse to call themselves “Jedi” yet. He mentioned that although he doesn’t want to make any guarantees, the movie will be set before the existence of the Jedis. You can read his full response below:

"I don’t want to make any guarantees one way or another, but it’ll be before Jedi [exist]. Meaning, you might be experiencing something that might become Jedi... but, despite the fact that some people make movies other ways, I don’t think people tend to brand themselves before they’ve found themselves. You don’t come up with a name for your organization… I tend to think that the branding happens later.”

James Mangold's Star Wars Movie Timeline

James Mangold’s movie is set so far back in the Star Wars timeline that even the director couldn’t recognize the exact time it took place. Mangold said,  "When I talked to some of the Star Wars clerics who keep track of all these timelines, I was like, 'so when would this have happened?' And they were like, '25,000 years before Episode I.' And I was like, 'I was looking for some distance, but that’s distance. I might find Charlton Heston in an abandoned subway station with apes, but I’ll do it!'"

The Star Wars prequel movie was officially announced back in April 2023 during Star Wars Celebration, along with several different live-action movies to be set in the galaxy far, far away. A couple of details regarding the movie’s timeline have been released, even though Mangold stated in previous interviews that he suggested the idea as "kind of a Ben-Hur or The 10 Commandments about the birth of the Force."

Although Lucasfilm has not given a proper title to the movie, fans refer to it as Dawn of the Jedi after the 2012 Star Wars comic series written by John Ostrander and Jun Duursema. This is because the comic's events also occur 25,000 years before the Skywalker Saga.

Apart from Mangold’s movie, Lucasfilm also announced a live-action feature film directed by Dave Filoni. This movie will serve as the climax of multiple Star Wars Disney+ shows such as Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, and The Book of Boba Fett. Furthermore, in an upcoming film by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the actress Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey. This movie will be set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker.
