The nominees for the 2023 Emmy Awards have been announced and it looks like House of the Dragon isn't as critically acclaimed as everyone expected. The Game of Thrones prequel was expected to receive numerous nominations after the amazing first season. However, the HBO series only received one major nomination this year.
It always looked like House of the Dragon is well on its way to following in the footsteps of the multi-awarded Game of Thrones. After all, the first season featured powerful and emotional performances from Paddy Considine, Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Matt Smith. At one point, people were sure that all the main players of the series will be nominated or win a major acting award this year.
However, it looks like the Emmys had different plans for 2023. Although House of the Dragon was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, it's the only nomination for the show. It's almost like the Emmys forgot the names of the actors involved in the HBO series.
So what exactly happened with House of the Dragon? It's unclear why the show only got one major nomination. However, it's possible that the series had trouble nominating non-binary actors like lead star Emma D'Arcy. On the other hand, that doesn't explain why Paddy Considine didn't get a nod despite his performance in Episode 8.
Although House of the Dragon only had one major award nomination, the series received seven technical awards for its episodes. This includes Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Period Or Fantasy Program, Outstanding Cinematography For A Series, Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes, Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic), and Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (One Hour).
For now, the lack of nominations for House of the Dragon at the 2023 Emmys has not yet been explained. However, the show is still set to move forward with its second season which is already expected to premiere next year.
House of the Dragon Season 2 has not yet been given an official release date.
