There is little doubt that House of the Dragon Season 2 simply can't be stopped. The second season of the Game of Thrones prequel is still moving forward amidst the ongoing strikes and it looks like there will be a lot of changes when the series returns. It has already been confirmed that Season 2 will only consist of eight episodes.
But what is with the shorter episode count in the second season? Could this reflect negatively towards the HBO series? House of the Dragon director Clare Kilner gave an interesting explanation as to why the number of episodes has been reduced for Season 2.
Clare Kilner recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about working on the first season of the show and what it's like to return for Season 2. Interestingly, when asked about how House of the Dragon has been reduced to just eight episodes for the second season, Kilner explained that it's all about putting the story first.

"There are eight wonderful episodes with so much happening in every episode, and we have trouble, at times, bringing them down to one hour," she said. Kilner then explained that sole showrunner Ryan Condal had a clear vision of how he wanted to tell the story in Season 2.
"Ryan’s decision was to give it a good opening and a good ending, and they’re jam-packed with emotional and visually exciting events," Kilner stated.
It is great to know that the team behind House of the Dragon has a clear view of what they want to do with the series. The shorter episode count ensures that the series will not stray from the storyline and only feature important parts of the ongoing conflict between the Targaryens. This means the show will be able to maintain the pace of the story.
What happens in House of the Dragon Season 2?
The second season of House of the Dragon is expected to take place immediately after the shocking death of Lucerys Velaryon in the previous season finale. This means that the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons will be in its early stage and things are set to be truly bloody this season.
House of the Dragon Season 2 is currently in production amidst the ongoing strikes. The second season has not yet been given an official release date. However, it is already expected to premiere on HBO sometime in late 2024 or early 2025.
