HBO has officially released the first trailer for its highly anticipated television adaptation of the Harry Potter series, offering audiences an early glimpse into a reimagined wizarding world and confirming a surprise Christmas premiere in 2026.
The traile highlights the new young leads stepping into iconic roles while recreating several memorable moments from the beloved books. Directed by Mark Mylod, known for his work on Game of Thrones, and with Francesca Gardiner serving as showrunner, the series promises a faithful yet expanded dramatic retelling of J.K. Rowling’s saga across multiple seasons.
The official title of the season is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It is going by the first book's original title, as published in the United Kingdom, rather than the Sorcerer’s Stone variant used in the United States for the 2001 film adaptation.
In the trailer, viewers see young Harry Potter (Dominic McLaughlin) beginning his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry alongside his friends Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton) and Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout). Among the adult cast, John Lithgow takes on the role of Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer portrays Professor Minerva McGonagall. Nick Frost appears as the half-giant Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu steps into the position of Potions Professor Severus Snape. Additional casting includes a range of supporting performers bringing fresh interpretations to familiar characters from the source material. J.K. Rowling is involved as an executive producer, alongside a team that includes Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.

The production, a collaboration between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television, aims to deliver a more detailed, serialized exploration of the seven-novel series. Each season will focus on one book, allowing for deeper character development and world-building than the original films permitted. Filming has been underway in the United Kingdom, capturing the magical atmosphere of locations like Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, and the Forbidden Forest with high production values expected from HBO. The trailer showcases updated visuals for key elements, including the sorting ceremony, early Quidditch matches, and encounters with mythical creatures, all while maintaining the wonder and adventure that defined the franchise.
This adaptation arrives more than two decades after the first Harry Potter film captivated global audiences, grossing billions at the box office and spawning a massive multimedia empire. By returning to the books as the primary source, the series seeks to appeal to both longtime readers and a new generation discovering the story through streaming. Industry observers note the project’s ambitious scope, with plans extending through the full arc of Rowling’s narrative, potentially spanning years of storytelling on the platform.
JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming & games at Warner Bros. Discovery, described the project as “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It’s number one, two and three in many ways.”
The first season of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is set to premiere on HBO and Max on Christmas 2026, marking an earlier-than-expected debut that has heightened excitement within the entertainment industry. Subsequent seasons will follow, continuing the epic tale of the boy who lived and his battles against dark forces. With its combination of fresh talent, experienced creatives, and a commitment to the original literary vision, HBO’s Harry Potter series positions itself as a landmark television event poised to enchant viewers once again during the holiday season.
