Samurai fans will have to wait a little longer. Crunchyroll announced during its Showcase panel at New York Comic Con 2026 on October 8 that the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime is moving from its planned 2027 debut to 2028, while also revealing new cast members, additional staff, and a world-premiere trailer screened exclusively for panel attendees.

Crunchyroll made the announcement on stage at NYCC, where the streamer also confirmed the anime remains an exclusive for its platform. The delay pushes back a project first announced in January 2025, which had its 2027 window reiterated as recently as Anime Expo 2026 alongside new character visuals.

The newly announced cast additions connect the anime directly to the games. Mayumi Saco — who voiced Tomoe, the master archer and star pupil of Sensei Ishikawa, in the original Ghost of Tsushima — joins the cast, alongside Shinya Fukumatsu, best known as Bomb in One-Punch Man. Their roles were not disclosed.

Behind the scenes, the production is bulking up its sound team. Keiji Inai (Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, Star Wars: Visions — "The Duel") joins as composer, with Yoshikazu Iwanami (Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) as sound director and Yasumasa Koyama (Ajin) handling sound effects. Gyousyou Suzuki, who did the calligraphy for the Barakamon live-action drama, will create the title calligraphy.

They join a heavyweight team already in place: director Takanobu Mizuno (Star Wars: Visions — "The Duel") at Kamikaze Douga, series composition by Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus), and character designs by Afro Samurai creator Takashi Okazaki. The series is produced by HAYATE, the joint venture between Aniplex and Crunchyroll, in collaboration with Aniplex and PlayStation Productions, with Sony Music as the music and soundtrack partner.

What is Ghost of Tsushima: Legends about?

The anime adapts Legends, the supernatural co-op multiplayer mode from Sucker Punch Productions' acclaimed 2020 PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima — not protagonist Jin Sakai's single-player campaign. In the game mode, four warriors — a Samurai, Hunter, Ronin, and Assassin — defend Tsushima from Oni and other creatures drawn from Japanese folklore. The anime carries that same folklore-inspired register into a new story.

Crunchyroll's official synopsis sets the stage:

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends follows one of the last remaining samurai as he defends his homeland of Tsushima against the Mongol Empire.

No more specific release date within 2028 has been announced. The series will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll, continuing Sony's push to bring its biggest PlayStation properties to anime — a strategy that has already made the project one of the most anticipated adaptations on the streamer's slate.
