Ewan McGregor has pointed to a significant stretch of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s life that remains “unfinished” in the Star Wars timeline. The actor highlighted the gap that sits between the conclusion of his Disney+ series and the events of A New Hope. This period covers roughly ten years of the Jedi Master’s exile and has received little attention across film or television projects.
McGregor made the remarks while promoting The End of Oak Street alongside co-star Anne Hathaway in an Esquire interview. Asked about elements of the character’s journey that still feel incomplete, he focused on the years leading up to Alec Guinness’s portrayal of the older hermit on Tatooine. The discussion underscored how much of Obi-Wan’s transformation during the Empire’s rise has yet to be shown on screen.
“Everything that we did between the end of the TV series that we did and Alec Guinness [in A New Hope]. There’s 10 years of something happening to Obi-Wan,” McGregor noted. “At the end of the series, I leave Luke on Tatooine, Princess Leia is safe, and I go off into the desert on my camel – a eopie, I think they’re called.” Those comments frame the decade as a rich stretch of potential storytelling that bridges the younger warrior with the wiser mentor audiences first met in 1977.
McGregor returned to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 2022 Disney+ mini-series, which also featured Hayden Christensen reprising Anakin Skywalker. The limited series explored the Jedi’s early years in exile and his reconnection with the Force after the fall of the Republic. Its ending deliberately left the character riding into the desert, setting up the long stretch of isolation that followed.
That final image of Obi-Wan departing on an eopie leaves a clear narrative space before the events of A New Hope. During those years the Jedi would remain largely hidden while keeping a distant watch over Luke Skywalker. The period offers room for new challenges, quiet character development, and encounters that never contradict the original trilogy. McGregor’s comments suggest he sees real value in examining how the broken survivor of the series becomes the calm guide who later trains the next generation.
Comics have already touched on pieces of this exile, including journal-style entries and retrospective stories set on Tatooine. Still, the actor’s remarks keep attention on the possibility of further live-action exploration. No second season of the mini-series has been announced, yet the ten-year window continues to stand out as one of the more open chapters in Obi-Wan’s larger Star Wars arc.
