Deadpool & Wolverine Director Reveals What Made Henry Cavill "Sick to His Stomach" After Filming

Though Henry Cavill only filmed his scene in Deadpool & Wolverine for a day, one important prop they used badly affected him.

Henry Cavill surprised everyone when he appeared as a Wolverine variant named the Cavillrine in Deadpool & Wolverine. Though it was quite expected after his cameo rumors emerged, nothing beat the excitement of seeing him in the film. However, despite perfectly nailing his scene, director Shawn Levy revealed one part of that sequence made the Superman star “sick to his stomach” after filming.

In an interview with the New York Times, Levy talked about Cavill’s cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. The Man of Steel star only filmed his scene for a day. However, he couldn’t help but be affected by all the cigar smoke he inhaled for the whole eight hours.

“I think we all were, including poor Henry Cavill, who not only had that pumped-up muscular body but kept that cigar lit and in his mouth for the entirety of the shoot day,” the filmmaker explained. “I remember hearing the next day that Henry was sick to his stomach because he had been inhaling cigar smoke for eight hours straight, but never once did he waver.”

Levy explained that they cast Cavill soon after he left DC Studios. The British actor first played Superman in Zack Snyder’s 2013 Man of Steel, followed by the 2016 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the 2017 Justice League. He also made a cameo in the post-credits scene of Jaume Collet-Serra’s 2022 Black Adam. However, come December 2022, he announced his departure from the rebooted DC Universe and was replaced by David Corenswet as the new Superman.

“It was not long after everything went down with DC, and word came that Henry was being replaced as Superman,” Levy said.

Knowing Deadpool is all about pop culture, they found it a great opportunity to have Cavill as part of the cast and play a role that he would “kick ass.” But aside from that, it was also their way to poke fun at another comic-book-based movie and “play with some self-awareness.”

Henry Quickly Agreed to be Part of Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverine has brought to life Marvel’s abandoned superheroes again, like Blade (Wesley Snipes), Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Johnny Storm / Human Torch (Chris Evans), X-23 (Dafne Keen) and Gambit (Channing Tatum). Surprisingly, it also includes the former DC Extended Universe star, Cavill, who played Superman from 2013 to 2022. As Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) swore to treat him “so much better than those s---f---s down the street,” referring to DC, Levy revealed Cavill quickly agreed to be part of the threequel as he made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut.

“He said 'yes' right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful,” the director told Variety. “It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he's appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero.”

Levy explained that every surprise casting in the third Deadpool movie came down to Reynolds or him personally reaching out to the actors before lawyers and agents were involved. Hence, the process included them asking and the actors ultimately saying “yes.”
