Deadpool & Wolverine has featured a number of jaw-dropping cameos, and some of them are totally unexpected. Though the appearances of Wesley Snipes as Blade, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Channing Tatum as Gambit, and Chris Evans as Johnny Storm / Human Torch excite many, the most emotional cameo is probably Dafne Keen’s Laura Kinney / X-23. Amid the strong rumors that the Star Wars: The Acolyte star would appear in the movie, she repeatedly denied the claims until Marvel Studios finally decided to show her return in the final trailer. Now that the threequel is out in theaters and on its way to reach the $1 billion mark at the box office, Keen discusses her “heartbreaking” reunion with Hugh Jackman after James Mangold’s 2017 Logan.
In a talk with ComicBook’s Phase Zero podcast, Keen talked about X-23’s reunion with a different variant of Logan in Deadpool & Wolverine. Though the actress found it wonderful, she also saw it as tragic, as the young Laura didn’t get the chance to tell her father that she loved him and was grateful for him.
“She's getting this opportunity now, but it's not really him,” she said. “So, it's working with the tragedy that it's so close, yet so far.”
The Spanish-British actress added that X-23's closest chance to tell Logan everything she wanted was through a different variant of Wolverine she had just met. However, though technically a stranger, the once wild child loves and cares for him because he’s Logan.
“She can't say too much because he doesn't know her, but she knows him,” she continued. “It's so heartbreaking and so genius for them.”
Dafne Keen Expresses Interest in Returning as X-23 to the MCU
X-23 is now all grown up and a formidable fighter as she fights off Cassandra Nova’s (Emma Corrin) army in Deadpool & Wolverine. Thankfully, after Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) has saved Earth-10005, she manages to leave the wasteland and join Wade and Logan in the real world. So, now that she’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Keen expresses her interest in reprising her role and returning to the franchise. She’s even willing to pay Marvel Studios to have her back.
“I would love to come back. I would pay them to come back,” she said. “Playing Laura has been the biggest honor of my life.”
After her latest appearance, Keen revealed that they had only scratched the surface of her character, knowing she was very complex. But despite her wild behavior, she still found her role “so cool” from a “fan’s standpoint.”
Deadpool & Wolverine has opened a lot of doors for several X-Men characters now that they are part of the MCU. Though it remains to be seen what will be next for Keen’s X-23, everything is possible, especially with the upcoming X-Men reboot.
